2013 Writing - End of Year in Review
I copied the format I used last year because I liked it quite a bit. And yes, I realize there are still three days left this year, but the 31st is a work night, and I won't have time for all that wonderful coding ; )
2013 Writing stats overall

short stories: 4 total, the longest is 16K, the shortest 2K
and the novel: 1
This latest complete draft (which I'm shelving until February when the big editing begins), is around 70K, but multiple drafts were written, along with back stories for some of the characters. Altogether about 165K of my writing this year was the novel.

Overflow
for the prompt: Getting all charged up for the Trials and then not discharging that energy by closing the gates of hell may not have been such a great idea. Sam's not sick any more, but his powers are back -- visions, telekinesis, other freaky stuff -- and he has no control over it and he's starting fires and hurting people. And then it gets worse and he's causing little cracks in the reality around him, cracks between earth and heaven and hell and purgatory and the fae realm.
At this point it's not even that discharging the energy all at once will probably kill him, it's that they don't know how to do it without blowing the whole thing apart.
Bliss in Emptiness
As a reward for her loyal service, Lucifer brings Ruby back from death. When Sam throws himself into the Cage, Ruby slows his fall - just enough to grab a hold of his body, but not his soul. Together, they hunt the ever-increasing monster population and uncover evidence that Crowley and Castiel might not be as antagonistic as they seem. As the situation unfolds, Eve's interest in Sam piques and she gives him a gift that changes the very essence of what he is.
August:
Instinct
for the prompt: After the trials, Sam doesn't get better. Kevin's theory is that it's cancer: the trials are supposed to purge him of all physical and spiritual impurities, so tuberculosis is out, and cancer is the only reason left for Sam to be coughing his lungs up when he's supposed to be the pinnacle of human perfection.
Nope. Sam's falling apart because the demon blood is gone.
Little Blue House
Jessica Moore is in Heaven, at least she thinks she is. But Sam isn't how she remembers him.
September:
Hair of the Dog
Sam & Brady have a little too much to drink and Sam wakes up with a killer headache. Luckily, Brady has a cure.
After the Fire
Lucifer won and took over the world in Sam's body. He keeps Dean a prisoner. If Sam misbehaves (tries to fight the possession) Dean is punished, if Sam behaves, Lucifer lets him talk to Dean once in a while.
We All Fall Down
John Winchester made a deal to save Dean's life. When that deal is unexpectedly broken, John has to face the consequences. His family is torn apart, his own mind starts to crack, and the Apocalypse begins.
How Does That Make You Feel?
Chuck goes to see a psychiatrist after his dreams take a disturbing new turn.

Sam stopped the trials, but he isn't getting any better. The Winchester's have Crowley trapped in their dungeon, when all Kevin wants is to see the demon-king dead.

They say those Winchester boys're crazy. Drive around in a big black beast and drink too much and laugh about mean things. They say their daddy's worse, but you never see him. He's just a voice on the other end of the phone or a darker shape in the back seat of their dark car.
They say John Winchester died two years ago.

for the prompt: Sooo...what do you think would happen if a certain unknowingly possessed-by-an-angel hunter found himself force-fed demon blood?

There's a train that only comes by once a year. Most people never see it. Sarah Blake boarded it twice.
Qualitative fic analysis:
favorite of the year:
Counteroffer. The most satisfying straight-up evil!Sam I wrote all year. There was something about writing this from Dean's POV that felt so deliciously claustrophobic I actually creeped myself out writing it. Which is one of my favorite things in life ; )
best of the year:
Tough call. In terms of reader response the clear winner is Bliss in Emptiness. In terms of what I think was my personal best? I might have to go with We All Fall Down
most fun to write:
hands down, Impala's Run. Writing with quickreaver is always such a treat, and this time around was no different, but the setting in this, you guys, the setting was SO much fun! Any time I get to reimagine our beloved Supernatural characters in a new world it's like dropping me in a store full of shirtless Sam and demon-blood candy, but this fic? Endless awesome. I enjoyed writing Ellen & Jo as a mother-daughter bounty hunting team so damn much I've got an original screenplay inspired by it ; )
most underappreciated:
After the Fire
I quite enjoyed writing this, because it's end!verse with a twist and end!verse is so very grim. But that's probably why not too many people clicked with it. Because it's so grim. And yet: end!verse, tortured Dean, Lucifer!Sam. I'm especially pleased with the last chapter.
sexiest fic:

Nothing like evil!Sam fucking Jess while angels fall out of the sky : D
"holy crap that's wrong, even for you":
::cough:: well if the 'sexiest fic' choice doesn't count then I think I'll go with Counteroffer again because of the mind-fuckery. It was pretty damn twisted, even for me, and I loved writing every word of it.
fic that shifted my perspective of the characters:
Bliss in Emptiness Any time I write Ruby POV it's enlightening, but pairing her with soulless!Sam put a whole new spin on things. It was really interesting to get into their heads and imagine how differently things would have turned out in season 6 if she'd been there beside him.
hardest to write:
There's a Train
Probably because I've never written Sarah Blake before, and writing a character for the first time is always a bit tricky.
biggest disappointment:
See above. I think I could've done a better job with it if I had more insight into her character.
biggest surprise:
John Winchester is Dead. Surprising in terms of enthusiastic feedback but also surprising because I didn't originally think zombie-John being carted around by the brothers was going to be so much damn fun to write. But it really was.
most telling:

I had a fun year of writing, and was able to split my words well between both fanfic and original story pursuits, which is always a good thing. This year I learned that exploring new environments and characters is extremely important for your writing muscles, and also that sometimes- you just have to let your id come out and play ; )
