Jane (Katherine Heigl) has always loved weddings. So, when she grew up, she decided to help others with their weddings. During a night of commuting to two different weddings, she meets Kevin (Jason Marsden) after hitting her head on the floor during a bouquet throwing. However, Jane leaves her day planner in the taxi that Kevin took her home in. Can you say "Jackpot"?
The next day at work, her friend Casey (Judy Greer) gives her a hard time about her crush for their boss Geroge (Edward Burns). After Jane picks up her sister Tess (Malin Akerman), George and Tess hook up at the engagement party for Gina, held at a club with people dressed like mannicans at Hot Topic. After this, a speedy engagement caused by Tess's trail of lies ensues. Oh, and Jane is the maid of honor. Sure she does this on a regular basis, but this is her sister marrying the man she loves. Now that's the icing on the cake.
While picking the wedding cake, Kevin shows up. Only, he introduces himself as Malcolm Doyle. Turns out that Kevin/Malcolm writes for the Styles section of The New York Journal (a clear play on The New York Times, considering that The New York Journal hasn't been published in 30+ years) and Jane loves his writing. One day, Kevin shows up at Jane's apartment because he's supposed to interview all of the family of the couple. He sees Jane's closet of bridesmaid dresses and she tries all 27 of them on for him. Unbeknownst to her, Kevin/Malcolm is writing an article on her. Of course, Kevin begins to fall for her. That falls through when the article he's written on her runs in the paper the day after they have sex. Oops. She pushes Kevin away and not only does her life, but the lives of the others come tumbling down on them.
It has a predictable plot, but the writing keeps it from being dragged out and boring, like teen movies. Heigl's acting is excellent in this film (granted I've never seen her in anything else). Her ability to say things like "I am Jesus" and "hot hate sex" so non-challantly is rather incredible. How she plays off of Marsden also makes the film rather enjoyable. It has a good supporting cast and a good script, but not as good as Aline Brosh McKenna's previous film that she wrote the screenplay for (The Devil Wears Prada).
However some things bothered me with the movie. And I'm not just talking about a scene in which Jane and Tess are standing infront of the Bethesda Fountain and they don't show the angel. Take for instance, it is discussed that Tess and Jane's parents were married at the Boathouse in Central Park. How much does it cost for someone to have a wedding at the boathouse? Also, there is a three week time span from Tess and George's engagement and the wedding. In order to have a wedding anywhere in Central Park, you have to get a permit from the city. This is just me being finiky, but it seems to me that three weeks is too short of a time to get a permit. Again, technical.
Overall, a pretty good romantic-comedy. Not as good as two of my previously reviewed films, Sweeney Todd and Juno, but it could be considered an unfair comparision. But, you have to like romantic comedies to really enjoy this movie. But if you do, I recommend it to you.
