So, after temporarily(?) abandoning the Pile of Suck, I've been trying to take things slow, stare at the sky, and brainstorm without a pen in my hand so I don't just write down the first stupid thing that comes into my head.
I pick up a pen eventually, of course.
So I have two ideas.
1. In 2123, a young Korean man ends up Down and Out in What Was Once the Gold Coast. See, even if we do fuck up the planet, humanity will probably survive, and I figured I'd imagine one of the ways we might. While the rich retreat to the high country, the eastern seaboard becomes one big high-rise slum, which is where the protagonist ends up living again. That's it really; stuff happens, good and bad, and life goes on.
2. In a low-fantasy setting, a bunch of travellers end up trapped in a small isolated village over the winter. Tempers flare, supplies are stretched, and people die horribly. This idea is less fleshed out than the other, but I have a couple of characters, and frankly the only way I feel comfortable writing fantasy is to lock it down into a small area. Epic fantasy usually sucks. I know mine does.
Anyway, that's what I have so far. I kind of toed-and-froed about putting them up here, because telling people sometimes kills my enthusiasm, but not telling people sometimes means I wander up the garden path and get hopelessly lost and have to fight may way home through rose bushes.
