A plainclothes policeman who drew his gun while chasing someone he had found rummaging through his car was shot and killed by a fellow officer who was driving by and saw the pursuit, the police commissioner said.
Commissioner Raymond Kelly said 25-year-old Omar J. Edwards died after being shot late Thursday within blocks of the Harlem housing police station where he worked. The medical examiner said Friday that the fatal shot entered his back.

Off-duty NYPD cop fatally shot by fellow officerAnyone who's read this LJ for a substantial amount of time probably already knows what I think of the NYPD's latest incident of many, so I didn't really feel a need to say anything about it. As it turns out there's just a tad bit more to the story for me though. My mom just called me and let me know that Officer Edward's father was a friend of hers. They've known each other, apparently, since they were young and living in Panama. He was well known for playing in one of the local bands. She lamented over never having gotten to meet any of his kids.
How small a world we live in.
