The Dark Knight

Finally saw it today and I liked it. A lot. Yes, it was long but there were no ‘omg, this is boooring, could you get on with the story’ moments. The story it told required the length. Anyway, feel like saying something so I’ll do just that.

Babs... I really wanted to see Babs. I don’t know what the deal with her is. Ok, Gordon has a wife named Barbara, check. They have a son named Jimmy, check. And there’s a daughter. But, we never hear her name, and never see her face either. Her hair looked brown but guess they could pretend it was red. But I’m still curious about all this hiding. And I do wonder, is the end thing with Harvey taking the family hostage gonna be the reason Barbara leaves with Jimmy? Because I really do hope they follow the story with them. I know it’s unlikely there will ever be a Batgirl. If Christian Bale doesn’t want Robin then why would he agree for Batgirl. But I’d still like to see Jim Gordon dealing with raising Barbara on his own. Babs creating a little trouble and stuff... That would be cool.

At first I was miffed about there being this Ramirez character and not Montoya. But since they made her dirty at the end it made sense. It doesn’t bother me anymore, obviously.

I am a bit upset about Rachel’s death. If it had been Katie Holmes still playing the role I would’ve said good riddance. But Maggie didn’t deserve that. She was just a plot device in Harvey’s fall. She should’ve been more. But then again, that is usually the role of women in comics so it’s nothing out of the ordinary.

I’ve never liked the Joker character. Yes, he crippled Babs and will forever be on my list for comic book characters who should just die (and stay dead). But he’s also so damn nuts I couldn’t help but laugh with him at times. I liked this Joker more than the one in Batman. Heath Ledger’s Joker seemed more like a real human being who’s totally effed up in the head. And I like that, the characters being more believable.

The end was curious. Making Batman a cop killer. Yeah, I get the whole being chased by cops is his thing. But isn’t it a bit more serious to be chased as a cop killer? Not sure where they’re going with that.

Anyway, The Dark Knight was a movie about characters. More than just Batman. And maybe that’s why I liked it so much. It made Batman more likable when he wasn’t brooding on the screen all the time and being all high and mighty.

Next week: X-Files! Woohoo! It’s so much fun when there’s movies worth watching in the theaters again.
