Last night there were quite a few critters on the cams: deer, opossum, bobcats, a coyote, and a fox. I’ll only post the poor fox discovering the electric fence:

The cameras have provided a wonderful look into the yard at night. I didn’t realize how ( Read more... )

Those two mice may be in the middle of the ‘pursuit of happiness.’ Which means more mice!

Aww, that poor fox. But he didn't actually get hurt, so as far as life lessons are concerned it was probably a valuable yet tame one.

He certainly felt the shock! The charger is 6kV, or 0.1 joule without load. https://www.zarebasystems.com/zareba-ac-powered-5-mile-charger-ea5m-z

My arm felt numb when I got jolted one day as I carelessly clipped weeds around the wires :D

Well, yeah, they're supposed to feel it, right? Wouldn't do much good otherwise. :) And you have to take into account that the fur is somewhat insulating, too.

Sounds like it's working then. :D

You definitely have quite a variety of critters out there! Gotta keep an eye on the mice though, they can make nests in all sorts of places you really don't want them to! With Winter approaching, they're looking for warm places to stay in.

The mice can certainly be a problem. They have gotten in the house a few times, and have chewed wires in the vehicles. Heh, they nest in the garden tractor constantly, between uses.

As in the old Kansas song, "We only catch a glimpse of all the life that is around".

The diversity of the fauna here is humbling to me. I only knew how many critters we actually have nearby after putting out the trail cams. This was once farm land all around me, and where I have let about five acres go back to the wild my neighbors have chosen to defoliate or put in non-native plantings. And the platts... so many developments now.
