My sister’s ex, a mechanic, once told me to save the parts you replace in a tune up in case the new ones fail. Being a hoarder, er, saver by nature that made good sense. So, yeah, I had some odd old things here that I actually just let go of (tossed) including a mystery motorcycle chain, possibly from the Harley, and some belts which may have come from my ‘71 Plymouth.
The story:
Where’s this going? I got a text from my wife yesterday that the gas stove wouldn’t light. This has happened before, twice, so I knew I just needed to pick up a new glow rod (igniter). Well, there are no close-by brick-and-mortar appliance parts stores now, the last being Sears who would have had Maytag parts in stock. And Amazon, from whom I bought the last two igniters, didn’t have the part I wanted readily available. I did finally find a compatible part after some lengthy cross-checking, a part that had next day shipping and wasn’t outrageously priced.
But what about the time between, before the part would arrive? Luckily I had saved the former igniter which hadn’t actually died but had gotten really, really slow to heat. Heh, it was still in the kitchen, near the stove, since January. Yes, the one that just failed was only installed ten months ago so I’ll look into that (I’ll have to fish it out of the trash). But I swapped out the part from the oven with the former one and it lit! And what followed was a baking marathon for three hours: two batches of muffins an two pies!
The newest part arrived this afternoon and is already installed. I may buy another to have on hand, just in case... Happy Thanksgiving!
