Mr. Magoo used to be a spokesperson for Stag Beer. I found his
commercials on YouTube once when looking for the more infamous
Fred Flintstone Winston cigarette advertisements.
Looking at Stag Beer history I ran across this classic bit of advertising from the 40's (click to enlarge)- those of you familiar with the Looney Toons DVD releases can see where these ads might need a Whoopi Goldberg disclaimer of sorts-
Stag has some beautiful labels (search google images) and I browsed the 'net looking at the company history. There's a connection to our local brew, Narragansett, to Falstaff (a cheap beer I drank in college), and now Pabst (i.e. PBR). They seem to cater still to the 'Everyman' beer drinker.
Today I noticed the name of Stag's brewer:
Griesedieck (the link gave me the brewery connections). My dad spent some time in Illinois with GE, in the early 50's, and laughed about a local brew he said the natives called Greasy Dick. Now I see where that came from. Strange coincidence to finish this entry...
