So watching Mawaru Penguindrum reminded me that I have long meant to rewatch Revolutionary Girl Utena. Although I think rewatch isn't quite the word, because like 10 years ago I attempted to watch it and it just didn't stick. And so it was put back on my eternal "Things Kristen would like to watch in full before she dies" list and languished there for many years for whatever reason. Mostly because whenever I thought to actually watch it, someone would jump in and tell me that I MUST WATCH IT, usually after I had finished something else and I don't know, I don't do so well when people tell me to read/watch/consume things. You want me to watch something just talk about it and squee about it without the pretense of anybody else following suit.
Whatever, I am watching it now for whatever reason. I am actually up to episode 16, but I figure posting after each arc makes a bit more sense then waiting to the end because by that time I am most likely swept up in what is going on at the end that I kind of forget to comment on the beginning.
This is not going to be that analytical of a post, yes this show is extremely metaphysical, and layered and I am sure years worth of academic thoughts can be written about it, but one this is only following the first 13 episodes and two, I am just never going to be that person.
♥ ♥ ♥ TENJOU UTENA ♥ ♥ ♥ Lady Heroine of my heart! So dashing, so noble, so swoon-worthy. There are hearts in my eyes and just be my girl forever. I don't care if you're fictional. I don't know what this dot is.
I think my favorite moments are when the series is at its most bizarre. Although I think my favorite bit so far is when Nanami was trying all these things to turn Miki and Utena against Anthy only to be comedically foiled every time. Put a snail in her pencil box? Already a bunch of snails. Going to pop a snake in the drawer? Watch out that is where they keep the mongoose! Going to put an octopus in the closet? WATCH OUT FOR GIANT OCTOPUS BALLOON! Also the bit where Touga has a boxing match with a kangaroo or when Nanami and posse go to India only to be harrassed by a herd of elephants. Nanami is just a walking goldmine it seems. Oh and curry that can make you switch bodies.
Did Takehito Koyasu play any non-douchebag characters in the 90s? That is not a rhetorical question.
I liked the end of the arc, because it was amazing and Utena fighting to reclaim herself, and Anthy subtly missing Utena even as you begin to doubt whether there was any realness to Utena and Anthy's friendship before Utena lost.
I want to punch all the dudes save for Miki in the face. I take that this is not an uncommon reaction.
You know people reference this show for the lesbianism, but honestly I think incest needs to have like equal billing. I have yet to spy a single functional sibling relationship in this series. Not that I tend to find those in any other anime either. If you don't have sibling problems then you have parent problems.
Utena and Anthy need to make out, though I guess I watch the whatthefuck movie for that.
