Full fun

As a kid, my favouritest hindi hero was Amitabh Bachchan. I could watch any of his songs, any number of times and never get bored. But one of his songs "John Johnny Janardhan" from the movie Naseeb was very special. Everytime the song played on TV, all the grown-ups in the house would gather around the TV set to catch glimpses of the many star personalities who made cameo appearances during the song. While I found all the background commentary rather amusing, about who spotted whom first, and which star looked better, I was mostly content at fixing my saucer-eyes on the tall man and his tray full of glasses which he juggled with great agility. That song was a musical kaleidoscope and circus rolled into one.

Om Shanti Om is something like that. A madcap comedy (most of which is tastefully done) with a looking glass pointing to the past. I don't even remember the last time I enjoyed a Bollywood spoof as much as this (were there others?). Apart from the obvious scenes, there are several retro influences snuck cleverly into the corners that catch your eye and keep the mind guessing. You can only marvel at the people who put this roller coaster of a movie together and envy them for all the fun they must've had making it! :-)

But if your childhood history was basically deprived of Bollywood chapters, it makes sense to skip the movie. To me, after the bitter experience of Saawariya, OSO was definitely worth every cent I put into it! It was good masaledar manna! :)

om shanti om, movies
