My favorite kids books

Mar 29, 2005 14:40

For my own amusement, and for future reference, I am listing my favorite kids books from board books on up to "chapter books." I am only going to list the really special ones, from my childhood and from reading to Zoe (this are marked with an asterick), so there will be many glaring omissions.

Great list. How do you remember all of those? I always had my nose in a book as a kid, but now I can't remember half the titles. I can't wait until Amelia is ready for chapter books. My dad used to read Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little to me at bedtime. We'd plan to read just one chapter but then get really into the story. He did voices and everything! I think we read Charlotte's Web 3 or 4 times.

I have similar memories of my mom reading to me at bedtime. So special. I am so looking forward to doing that with Zoe.

I am truly obsessed with kids' books and remember them so well. Plus, I received a great gift recently: a copy of The 100 Best Books for Children by Anita Silbey. She had a lot of my my favorites on her list and I also started remembering the ones she didn't list. I have started giving this book to my friends who have babies.

That book sounds great. I may have to check that out before I get Amelia's 2nd birthday books. Our pediatrician gives us an Rx for Reading when we go to our appointments, so I always get at least one or two of his recommended books. He founded/runs a non-profit called Daily Dose of Reading. He is fanatical about reading. They even have book clubs for kids of all ages that meet in his offices after hours.

I LOVE children's books and still pick them up and read them in lieu of grown-up literature from time to time. My favorites are the elementary school and up - lots of the ones on your list.

There is a great website I love to visit, for a bookstore somewhere in Ohio, I think, called Loganberry Books. I've spent hours reading through the "Solved Mysteries" portion. People post questions about children's books they remember, but they can't remember the title/author and then they get responses. I've re-found so many books I've loved there! Check it out at http://www.logan.com/loganberry/solved.html

Yes, I get very passionate about some of those elementary school books, like the Little House books and the Frances Hodges Burnett books. I'll definitely check out that website.
