Beach [afternoon]

Jul 16, 2009 17:02

It had been an extremely long and musical day, which was why Ben had fled to the beach as soon as his classes were over in the hopes that the song Captain Kirk had been singing would eventually get out of his head.

Naturally, he'd been on the beach all of a minute when he'd gotten his wish.

Cut for lyrics. Contain your shock! )

things i won't tell tahiri about, this shouldn't be cute, wooooooooooe, kisses!, well that was awkward, once more with fandom, karla, tahiri

Karla had been walking up the beach, trying to find a place where, if she decided to burst out singing again, she wouldn't be around anyone else doing it.

Unfortunately, it sounded like someone else had had that same idea. She was about to turn around and go when she recognized Ben. Which pretty much killed any idea of leaving.

Ben glanced up. "Hi, Karla."

Force, he hoped she hadn't heard any of his musical whining.

"Ki--Hey, Ben," Karla said, stumbling over her usual greeting. She did have the decency to pretend she hadn't actually heard him singing. Oblivious to most social cues or not, one didn't just casually tromp all over someone's innermost feelings like that.

Besides, it wasn't like he'd meant to be singing them.

"Crazy day, huh? Rimmer was...more unbelievable than normal."

He rolled his eyes. "I'm not sure which was worse, that song or Captain Kirk in Tactics singing about being on a boat when he clearly wasn't on a boat."

"I'd ask why, but I really don't think any of us have control over what we're singing and why," Karla said, idly tossing small pebbles and seashells into the ocean. "Or that we're singing at all. I woke up and serenaded my cabin with a song about how... shpadoinkle the day is."

She held upa hand. "Don't ask, cause I have no idea."

The shells made some a nice, almost rhymthmic plinking sound as they hit the water.

"Sounds like a word said before coffee," Ben replied with a tiny smile. "I got into a musical pissing match with my grandfather about who was better than who."

"Of all the days to miss a spar, I had to choose today," Karla said with a grin, nudging Ben with her shoulder. "I'm sure that was a treat for everyone involved. Did you start it?"

Karla was actually willing to bet it had been Anakin.

"Yeah," Ben said, blushing furiously.

Karla tried not to laugh. "It's okay," she assured him. "Your grandfather probably understands Fandom weirdness better than anyone." She leaned in to give him a hug.

"I'd certainly hope so," Ben said, holding on tightly. "He's been here forever."

Without Karla even realizing it was happening, she started to sing. Very quietly, but there was no way he couldn't hear, not with the two of them hugging so tightly.

"I feel your fingers -
Brushing my shoulder -
Your tempting touch,
As it tingles my spine -
Watching your eyes
As they invade my soul -
Forbidden pleasures
I'm afraid to make mine.

At the touch of your hand -
At the sound of your voice -
At the moment your eyes meet mine -
I am out of my mind -
I am out of control -
Full of feelings I can't define.

It's a sin with a name -
Like a tiger to tame -
And our senses proclaim
It's a dangerous game!"

Flinging herself backwards, Karla landed on the sand, clapping her hands over her mouth. She looked at Ben with almost terrified eyes.

Ben's eyes got huge.

"Um," he said eloquently.

"I don't know where that came from!" Karla blurted. "That wasn't me! It was the island! I didn't mean it! Oh Hell." Her face crumpled. "Please don't hate me," she whispered.

Given what had popped out of his mouth when he'd been with Ender, he was hardly in a position to be harsh.

"Of course I don't hate you."

"You...don't?" she asked, looking up at him. "But--but--" she scuttled away another few inches. "I didn't mean anything by it," she said, hoping beyond all reason he'd accept that. It wasn't a lie exactly, but it wasn't the full measure of truth, either.

"I know," he said, far too quickly. "This must be a little like that really bad week with the emotions."

No, Ben, it wasn't.
