This was a nightmare. It had to be, just waiting, waiting for something uncertain and painful was like torture. All Masuda knew was that Tegoshi was in surgery right now, but whether his condition was good or bad was something he didn’t have a clue about. The policeman that had taken him to the hospital had been nice enough to call his parents and beg them to come and support their son. Masuda was grateful, he really was, but hadn’t been able to thank the man as he deserved. The tears and pain had taken the overhand, and he had just nodded slightly when the man was leaving. He felt bad about it, but he just didn’t have the strength to do anything else. Why did Tegoshi always get himself into trouble? Why couldn’t he just have called the police and then let them do their job instead of playing hero? Masuda leaned forward and hid his face in his hands when thinking about it, about how easily this could have been avoided. He looked up when hearing his name in his mother’s voice and saw her walking towards him, her husband not far after. “Mom…”
She looked at him with obvious worry and sat down beside him, hugging him tightly. “How’s Tegoshi-kun?”
Masuda shook his head, sobbing softly. “I don’t know…I don’t know anything.”
“The police on the phone told me he had been shot…”
Masuda pulled back a bit, looking at her, nodding slightly. “He was…but I don’t know what happened.”
She embraced him again, patting his back slowly, comfortingly. “It’ll be fine, Takahisa.”
“He wanted you to approve of him…”
His mother nodded. “He’s trying really hard, isn’t he?”
Masuda sobbed. “He…he wanted to make up for his parents’ crimes…that are why he…”
The woman tightened his grip, patting his head. “Don’t worry, Takahisa. He’s a nice boy, we have already approved of him.”
These words just made more tears fall from Masuda’s cheeks, these words that should make him happy. But under these circumstances, they just made his heart break. “He would be so happy if he knew…”
“He’ll be fine.”
Masuda wanted to believe her, but he knew that there were no guarantees that Tegoshi would survive at all, and it made his heart break.
It took about an hour before any news about Tegoshi’s condition reached them, and Masuda couldn’t say that they calmed him down too much. Tegoshi was indeed stable now, but still unconscious, and the doctor hadn’t been able to give them any clear information about whether he would be fine or not. Masuda felt totally exhausted, and the tears didn’t even fall from his eyes anymore, like he didn’t have any left. His mother suggested that he would go home and get some rest, but Masuda refused. He didn’t want to leave Tegoshi all alone here; he wanted to be by his side even if the boy wouldn’t even notice. Tegoshi didn’t have anyone beside him; therefore he couldn’t just leave him alone. But all he could do was to wait, and it drove him crazy to just sit there, not being able to do anything else. It felt like an eternity had passed when the doctor came to see them again, Masuda’s stomach twisting in nervousness. “You can come and see him now if you want to.”
Masuda bit his lip and nodded, raising and following the doctor to Tegoshi’s room. His parents’ didn’t follow, something Masuda was thankful for, but he had wanted them by his side at the same time. The doctor opened the door to Tegoshi’s room for Masuda and held it open for him when he entered. Tegoshi was lying on a bed in the middle of the room, attached to lots of different machines and an oxygen mask covering his face. Masuda sat down beside the bed, grabbing the boy’s hand, letting the tears fall silently from his eyes.
The doctor was standing in the doorway, gazing at Masuda with pity in his eyes. “He’s stable for now, but nothing is certain about his condition.”
Masuda nodded, whispering a silent ‘thank you’.
“Please contact me anytime if you have any questions or just need to talk.”
Masuda nodded, sobbing softly. He heard the door shut and squeezed Tegoshi’s hand, letting the tears fall freely from his eyes. “Yuya, you idiot…Why couldn’t you just have called the police and then let them be?”
The silence made even more tears make their way down Masuda’s cheeks, and he wiped them away with a sleeve. “Don’t leave me, Yuya. You have to wake up and see what you have achieved. They’re under arrest now, all of them. You want to see that, don’t you?”
He sobbed, squeezing Tegoshi’s hand tightly. “Even mom and dad have approved of you, so please…please, don’t give in. You have to wake up again.”
Masuda let his fingers wander over Tegoshi’s face, removing bangs from his forehead. “You’re so beautiful, Yuya, I’ve always thought that.”
He leaned forward, kissing Tegoshi’s forehead softly. “I love you, Yuya. Please don’t leave me alone. Please.”

Masuda opened the door to Tegoshi’s room slowly, eyes falling at the boy lying on the bed in the middle of the room. Even though the boy didn’t see him, Masuda smiled, sitting down on the chair beside the bed, grabbing Tegoshi’s hand. “I graduated today, Yuya. You did too.” Masuda held up Tegoshi’s graduation certificate tube in front of him, smiling. “They told me to bring it here for you, since you couldn’t be there. You’ve graduated, Yuya, You made it.”
Masuda bit his lip, trying to hold the tears back. “I wished you could’ve been there. I really wanted to see you graduate.” He let the tears fall silently from his eyes. “Will you really abandon me, Yuya? Will you leave me all alone?”
He wiped his eyes with a sleeve, tightening his grip around Tegoshi’s still warm hand. Would Tegoshi stay like this forever? Alive, but not actually living. Masuda had done anything to see his smile, his sparkling eyes so full of love. The few days that had passed since Tegoshi’s accident felt far longer than they had actually been, and even Masuda started to lose hope a bit. He didn’t want to, but unconsciously he didn’t even expect Tegoshi to open his eyes again. He was always fast to push the thought away, because he didn’t want to lose hope, and because it broke his heart that with every passing day, the possibility of Tegoshi waking up again was decreasing. Masuda had been able to hold himself together the entire day, but somehow he just couldn’t do that anymore. He let the tears fall from his eyes and sobbed loudly, burying his face in Tegoshi’s shoulder, shaking and holding the boy tight. He just couldn’t stand it anymore, seeing the one person he loved like this, not even being able to open his eyes. “Yuya…” He just whispered Tegoshi’s name with a shaky voice, like it would make a difference, like the boy would actually hear it. He felt his heart stop for a moment when he felt someone pat his head lightly and lifted his head, looking into these lovely eyes he a moment ago thought he wouldn’t ever see again. “Yuya?”
Masuda could have sworn that he could see Tegoshi smile under the oxygen mask. “Takahisa…” Tegoshi’s voice was weak and shaky when he spoke, but Masuda couldn’t help but smile when hearing it. He removed the mask from Tegoshi’s face, letting the tears fall down his cheeks freely. “Yuya… oh Yuya…”
Tegoshi was laughing lightly, trying to lift his hand to touch Masuda’s face, but not having the strength to. Masuda just leaned down, pecking Tegoshi’s lips, letting his fingers wander over his face. “I thought you wouldn’t wake up again…” Masuda sobbed, wiping his face with a sleeve. “I’m so happy…”
Tegoshi smiled, squeezing Masuda’s hand lightly. “I’m sorry to have worried you…”
Masuda stroke Tegoshi’s cheek, and let his fingers wander over his forehead. “You’re an idiot, you know…I’m really mad at you.”
Tegoshi bit his lip, gazing at Masuda. “I’m sorry. I just couldn’t leave it at that. It was more or less revenge from my part.”
Masuda nodded, kissing Tegoshi’s forehead. “It’s all over now, don’t think more about it. I’m so happy that you’re still here, that’s the most important thing.”
Tegoshi nodded, pouting his lips, asking for a kiss. Masuda just smiled, leaning down and meeting the boy’s soft and warm lips. When breaking the kiss, he just looked at Tegoshi, smiling. “I love you so much.”
Tegoshi returned the smile, his eyes sparkling. “I love you too. But shouldn’t you contact a doctor and tell them that I’m awake?”
Masuda felt how his cheeks took a deep shade of pink, and he laughed nervously. “That’s right…sorry. I got lost in the moment.”
Tegoshi just giggled, squeezing Masuda’s hand. “It’s okay. It’s not your fault that you’re crazy about me, is it?”
Masuda laughed lightly, kissing Tegoshi’s forehead. “No, that’s your fault.”
Tegoshi giggled, pouting his lips, receiving the kiss he wanted. Masuda stroke his cheek before rising. “I better go get the doctor then. I’ll be right back.”
Tegoshi nodded, smiling happily. “I love you.”
Masuda smiled back, blowing Tegoshi a kiss, his cheeks turning dark afterwards. “I love you too.”

“Takahisa, are you done yet? Tegoshi-kun is already here to pick you up.” Masuda could hear his mother’s voice from the ground floor and looked at himself in the mirror, adjusting his tie one last time. Then he hurried down the stairs, his mother smiling when she saw him.
“You look so handsome.”
Masuda smiled, giving her a quick hug. She gave his cheek a stroke and smiled. “To think that this is your first day in university…time is passing so fast.”
Masuda laughed. “That’s true.”
“And Tegoshi-kun is able to attend too…He really has grown to be a fine man.”
Masuda laughed, giving his mother a last hug. “That’s indeed true, too.”
She smiled happily. “Well, off you go. Have a nice day, and tell Tegoshi to spend the night here, it was a while since we last saw him.”
Masuda nodded. “I will tell him that. Bye!”
He waved a last time before closing the door, walking over the road towards Tegoshi’s car that stood parked on the other side. Tegoshi was leaning against the engine cowling, dressed in a grey suit and fancy sunglasses. “You’re slow, I’ve been here for five minutes already.”
Masuda laughed, giving the boy a hug. “I wanted to look good today.”
Tegoshi smiled, kissing his cheek. “You always do, you don’t even have to put any effort into it.”
Masuda blushed slightly, hopping into the passenger seat, watching Tegoshi start the car and starting to drive towards the university. “But, you know…you might meet a lot of handsome and nice people here, I have to do my best to compete with those…”
Tegoshi laughed loudly, patting Masuda’s leg. “You don’t have to worry, the only one in my heart is Takahisa. Stop thinking things like that.”
Masuda smiled, looking at Tegoshi, resting a hand at his tight. “Are you nervous?”
The boy smiled. “A bit. But I’m really excited too, I’m sure this will be a lot of fun.”
Masuda nodded. “It’s amazing that you can study psychology, just like you wanted to.”
Tegoshi nodded, smiling. “And you can become a PE-teacher. Our dreams will maybe come true.”
Masuda nodded. “But it’s sad that you’re still living alone.”
Tegoshi shook his head. “It’s no problem. I didn’t know that my dad had a sister, but I’m glad she’s helping me with the rent and stuff. She’s really nice, you know. It’s like I’ve got a new mother.”
Masuda smiled, nodding. Tegoshi laughed lightly, turning his head to look at Masuda. “And if you’re worried that I’m lonely, then move in with me.”
Masuda just stared at the boy. “Seriously?”
Tegoshi laughed, driving to the side of the road, stopping the car and turning to Masuda. “Whenever you want to. It would be nice, wouldn’t it?”
Masuda just nodded, smiling widely. “It would.”
Tegoshi leaned in closer, placing a kiss on Masuda’s lips, a sweet and gentle one. He just smiled when breaking it, grabbing Masuda’s hand and squeezing it lightly. “Taka…thanks.”
Masuda just looked at Tegoshi, tipping his head to the side. “What for?”
Tegoshi smiled, meeting Masuda’s gaze. “For being by my side all this time. Even though I was a total shitbag, you never left me. I’m so thankful for it, really.”
Masuda just smiled. “Nothing to thank for. I love you, of course I wouldn’t leave you.”
Tegoshi turned his head, smiling at Masuda, that gentle smile that Masuda loved. “I still wanted to thank you. You did the one thing I needed at that time, it’s thanks to you that I’m the person I am today. Thanks for loving me, Takahisa.”
Masuda just smiled and kissed Tegoshi softly. “Thank you for loving me. You’re the most precious thing I have, and I don’t ever want to lose you.”
Tegoshi smiled, wiping away a tear that made its way down his cheek. “Taka too. I’m fine as long I have you.”
Masuda squeezed Tegoshi’s hand, kissing his cheek. “Then I won’t ever leave you. Because we belong together, don’t we?”
Tegoshi smiled, leaning his forehead against Masuda’s. “We do.”
