“Yuya, it’s time to go.” Masuda peeked his head inside the bedroom just to see Tegoshi lying on the middle of the bed, a pillow covering his face. Masuda sat down beside the boy and removed the pillow. “Yuya.”

Tegoshi pouted his lips and pressed his eyes tightly together. Masuda let his fingers wander over the boy’s forehead. “I know you don’t want to go, but you have to.”

Tegoshi sighed and rolled over to his side, with his back against Masuda.

“Baby, I know it’s hard, but you want to get well again, don’t you?”

Tegoshi looked up at him with sceptical eyes. Masuda caressed his cheek with the back of his hand lightly. “I know what you’re feeling. The tumour didn’t disappear on the last treatment, so why would it now?”

Tegoshi flashed Masuda an apologetic look before grabbing his hand in his own quite shaky one. Masuda squeezed it. “It may feel hopeless, but I’ll be by your side the entire time, okay? It’s okay to be scared, because I’ll be here to hold your hand.”

Masuda looked into Tegoshi’s fearful eyes before leaning down, kissing him softly. Tegoshi pulled him down so he could rest his head on the boy’s chest, hearing his heartbeats clearly. “To be honest, I wish you didn’t have to stay at the hospital during the treatment. I will miss you badly.”

Masuda sat up and looked down at Tegoshi. “I’ll come visit every day, until you’re sick and tired of me.”

Tegoshi smiled slightly, for the first time this day. He sat up and kissed Masuda again, wrapped his arms tightly around his neck. Masuda deepened the kiss and held the boy as close to himself as possible. When breaking the kiss, Tegoshi just rested his head on Masuda’s shoulder, just sitting like that, not wanting to leave. Masuda loosened his grip around Tegoshi and met his sad eyes, saying the thing none of them wanted to hear. “We have to go.”

A couple of days later, Masuda peeked his head into Tegoshi’s room at the hospital, smiling brightly. His smile vanished when he saw his boyfriend sit on the hospital bed with his knees pressed against his chest, tears slowly running down his cheeks. He had a beanie drawn over his head, almost fully covering his forehead. Masuda sat down beside the boy and squeezed his shoulder. “What’s the matter?”

Tegoshi bit his lip. Masuda removed the beanie slowly, noticed Tegoshi’s bald head. Tegoshi took the beanie from Masuda’s hand almost violently and put it on quickly. Masuda noticed the tears falling from the boy’s eyes and hugged him tightly. “So that’s what bothers you.”

Tegoshi dig his nails into Masuda’s shirt and sobbed. Masuda just caressed his back slowly. “It doesn’t matter, baby. You’re still beautiful, you will always be. It’ll grow out again, right?”’

Tegoshi looked up at him with big, teary eyes, but somehow he looked quite convinced. Masuda smiled. “You will always be the most beautiful person in the world for me, so don’t let this bother you.”

Tegoshi actually smiled back, it seemed like Masuda had told him what he needed to hear. He pouted his lips, and Masuda took the hint, placing a soft kiss on the boy’s lips. They parted quickly when they heard the door open, a smirking Yamashita standing in the entrance. “Ohh, sorry to interrupt you.”

Masuda blushed, but Tegoshi didn’t seem uncomfortable at all, smiling and waving happily. Yamashita smiled and handed Tegoshi a little pot. “Today’s medication.”

Tegoshi took the pot and looked at it with a slightly sad look. Masuda gazed at Yamashita. “Medications?”

Yamashita nodded. “It’s to prevent nausea, and also some for the appetite.”

Masuda nodded his head and looked Tegoshi who swallowed the pills down one by one. He felt a hand on his shoulder and turned his head, gaze meeting Yamashita’s. “Can we have a little talk?”

“Yeah, sure.” Masuda met Tegoshi’s slightly worried eyes, something that Yamashita seemed to notice as well. “Don’t worry, Tegoshi, I’m just going to explain some things about your treatment to your boyfriend. Because he is your boyfriend, right?”

Tegoshi smiled widely and nodded his head, looking proud, or maybe it was just what Masuda hoped for. He followed Yamashita out of the room, walked beside him up to the roof of the hospital. “It’s great that Tegoshi has someone like you by his side. It seems that you give him hope and power to fight on. You give him a reason to live.”

Masuda blushed slightly, discussing his relationship with Tegoshi like this was embarrassing. “That’s not it at all…I’m just…just…”

Yamashita looked at him and smiled. “No, you mean very much to him, more than you realize I think. Didn’t you see him? He was smiling. He’s in the middle of his treatment against his cancer, and he’s smiling. That’s because of you, that’s certain. A year ago, there’s no way he would smile when visiting the hospital, even though he was totally healthy then.”

Masuda rested his arms on the rail and gazed at the town beneath them. “He’s taking pills for the appetite?”

Yamashita nodded. “A side effect of the treatment is less appetite and nausea, among with the loss of hair. He seems to be sensitive, therefore we’re trying to prevent him from losing body fat, because he will get tired from eating less and losing weight.”

Masuda sighed lightly. “He’s thin enough to start with…he didn’t deserve this.”

Masuda could hear Yamashita sigh as well. “You’re right. It’s rare for such a young person to get this disease, and then getting a relapse…the world surely isn’t fair.”

Masuda got the feeling that Yamashita was closer to Tegoshi than a doctor usually was to a patient. He seemed to care for Tegoshi a lot, worry for him just as much as Masuda did. “You seem…close.”

Yamashita smiled sadly. “He was the first patient that was my responsibility, and we met quite often since I was the responsible doctor. I was there with him every time he came to the hospital for treatment.”

Yamashita got a look in his eyes that made Masuda’s stomach twist in something close to jealousy. Yamashita gazed at him and laughed lightly. “No need to look at me like that, nothing’s going on.”

Masuda blushed a bit, feeling impolite for behaving like that. Yamashita smiled like he was thinking of a fond memory and sighed a bit. “He was really doing his best at that time, keeping his hopes up with a smile. I think I fell in love with that smile. It was doomed from the start though, he had a girlfriend and was just a child at that time. And it remained an unrequited love.”

Yamashita turned to Masuda. “I’m not denying that I did love him, but I’m over him at this point, so don’t worry. I’m his doctor, and it’s my greatest wish to see him healthy and happy again. I still feel guilty because he lost his voice during the last treatment, and I don’t want anything similar to happen this time.”

Masuda shook his head. “That wasn’t your fault, right? He doesn’t seem to judge you, and that what counts, right?”

Yamashita nodded slightly. “You’re right. I’m glad he doesn’t, but I still wish that this didn’t have to happen.”

Masuda sighed deeply. “Indeed.”

“His body will become weaker, and he will suffer because of it. He will lose body-weight as I said before, mainly because he’s a sensitive case that loses his appetite due to the treatment he’s going through. Because of this, he will become very tired and won’t have much energy.”

Masuda gazed in front of him, eyes following a bird that freely was flying in the sky. “He’s frustrated that he won’t be able to go to school for a while.”

Yamashita laughed warmly. “That’s so much like him. I hope he won’t strain himself though, he has to rest and gather energy.”

Masuda nodded. “I’ll talk to him about it, he’ll listen to me.”

Yamashita nodded. “Please be there for him, he needs someone by his side. This is a hard time for him, and he won’t be able to handle it all alone.”

Masuda smiled slightly towards Yamashita. “No one needs to ask me to do that. I won’t ever leave his side, that’s for sure.”

Yamashita nodded, smiling. “I’m so glad he has you. He feels the same, his entire aura just shouts ‘love’ every time he sees you.”

Masuda blushed and looked down a bit, smiling. Smiling just because he was sure he himself looked like that every time he saw the boy as well.

Masuda met a happy and waving Tegoshi the next day, obviously exceedingly happy to see his boyfriend. Masuda went forward to the bed and gave Tegoshi a quick kiss, smiling against the boy’s soft lips.

“I didn’t get such a warm welcome.”

Masuda jumped what felt like a metre over the ground in surprise and felt how his face became bright red when he saw Tegoshi’s mother in the doorway. He stuttered out a series of incoherent sounds before he heard the woman giggle lightly. “Don’t get nervous just because I’m here.”

Masuda’s ears seemed to take an even deeper shade of pink and he looked down. “Ahhh, yeah…Yuya and I…we…”

Tegoshi’s mother laughed lightly and patted his arm before putting down the vase with flowers on the table beside the bed. “No need to explain, I busted the two of you a long time ago, you were quite obvious you know.”

Masuda made out a sound of embarrassment and sat down on the end of Tegoshi’s bed. “I thought that I managed to hide it at that time…”

She giggled again and smiled at them. “I know my little Yuya too well, there was no way I wouldn’t notice his feelings towards you. And it wasn’t hard to figure out that you felt the same.”

Masuda laughed quietly and smiled. “And I thought that I was discreet…”

“You definitely weren’t.” She smiled. “The two of you look so happy together, it warms my heart.”

Masuda smiled. “We are happy. Right, Yuya?” Masuda turned around to look at Tegoshi. “Yuya?”

Tegoshi looked down, hand covering his mouth, looking like he was going to throw up. “Yuya, are you okay? Do you need to throw up?”

Tegoshi nodded slightly, and Masuda was fast to help him to the bathroom, caressing his back comfortingly when he stood leaned over the toilet. “Its okay baby, take your time.”

He could hear Tegoshi’s soft sobs and squeezed his shoulder. “It’s okay, baby. It’s okay.”

Tegoshi’s mother stood in the doorway, looking quite worried. “Yuya? Is he okay?”

Masuda looked at her. “Nausea a side effect to the treatment. He’ll be fine.”

That was all Masuda could say when hearing Tegoshi’s soft sobs and coughs. This would be what Tegoshi would have to go through the next six months. Masuda suddenly understood why he would loose body weight fast, and how much he would suffer. “It’ll be fine, Yuya.”

Masuda drew his hands up and down the boy’s spine. “I’m sure things will be fine.”
