I work with a lot of people here in Houston who get eviction notices (I am a case manager for hurricane victims) and a lot of them call freaking out saying they are being evicted, when in reality they are not. I have NO idea if the law is different here than in MN since I had never dealt with, or known someone who dealt with that type of situation there...but here, just because they put a eviction notice on your door or tell you you are evicted means pretty much shit. They have to take you to court and you have a chance to say your side of why you can not afford rent, etc. etc. They put eviction letters up because they are trying to take advantage of people, basically because people dont know their rights. They think by putting up an eviction notice will get them out and they won't have to pay to go to court...they are ALWAYS trying to save a buck. If they put a lock out on your door too before going to court, you call the police, that's VERY illegal regardless of what they say, they are just trying to take advantage. I have no idea if this helps, but at the very least, do your research and know your rights....also, they will more than likely be willing to work out a payment plan with you if you approach them and you have been compliant up until recently. There are SOOOOO many resources out there that are willing to help with bills and rent . RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH! Social Services might be a good place to start, as well as any religious affiliated charities (catholic charities). While it's not ideal to spend hours on the phone with them on hold...sometimes its worth it, also, its always better to go to the agency and speak with someone personally. Well I have rambled enough...again, hope some of it helps.
