I hope you don't have the same kind of ants that we have from time to time. They're called crazy ants because they seem to run around in crazed, wiggly spurts instead of marching in a neat single file. They are on a mission for sugar - anything sweet, any miniscule amount of any sort of sweet residue (sugars only, not artificial sweeteners) seems to attract them. I have to keep my sugar in the refrigerator now, and they have ruined more than one box of Honey Nut Cheerios for us. We used to have them in the house we lived in when I was a child, too. They're really hard to get rid of. You either have to call an exterminator or spray the hell out of them. Ant baits and traps are useless, because of their random non-trailed movements.

Just what you want to hear. Anyway, I thought the info about the baits and such might be helpful, if you have a chance to observe your ants and figure out what kind they are. Crazy ants do follow a trail more or less, but they don't march straight as an arrow like other ants do. They sort of zap left and right every so often, as if their circuits are misfiring.

they are definately crazy ants. i think they are coming from inside my food pantry, which needs to be cleaned. cookies and such have fallen off the shelves onto the floor and i need to do a thorough investigation.
