texas immunization waiver

For those in Texas contemplating not vaccinating, selectively vaccinating, or if you simply want the legal power to vary from the recommended schedule should you ever deem it necessary (ie your child is sick and you want to postpone, has a bad reaction to a shot and you want to delay the next one, etc.) without worrying about them not being allowed in school/daycare:

This is the website that has how to obtain a waiver and they were even nice enough to include a sample letter so really all you have to do is fill in the blanks, mail it in, and get it notarized when/if you need it.

This is required by law to be accepted at all publicly funded schools/daycares and at any private school/daycare which accepts any public funds. Private schools/daycares who don't receive public funds can decide whether to accept it - a phone call is the easiest way to find out what their policy is. It must be renewed every two years.

I learned the hard way about a month ago that it is a really good idea to have one on file, even if you don't think you will need it. The preschool Patrick is on the waiting list for dropped their enrollment age and had one spot left open. But I didn't have the waiver so I couldn't sign him up. And unlike the other parents I refused to forge his vaccine record.

The website says it will be processed and mailed out within a week, but the person on the phone I talked to said it was more like two months. We will see.
