32 week checkup

So I went to my checkup yesterday thinking I was getting an ultrasound and an amniocentisis. Keith was all excited because he thought we were going to get to see Myra again. Well I was wrong and wrong. Whatever I thought I heard my new OB say thru her strong Indian accent, turned out not only to be boring but wrong.

When we got in to see her (in only 10 minutes, fastest time ever!), she measured me and listened to the baby's heartbeat as usual, and also pointed out that yes Myra has turned and is face down (she was breach last time I was checked and I thought she still was from the way she was kicking). Then she said, "Ok, I'll see you again in two weeks. You got any questions for me?" My jaw dropped. I thought we were doing some serious tests this time. So I asked her about it. She said that she had made a mistake and she thought I was going to be further along when she saw me this time, so we weren't going to do the GBS test until next time (that's what I misheard her say, apparently). So she told me they do the Group B-Strep (GBS) test at 36 weeks, not 32. It's a very simple swab test they do on everyone. Boring!

So that was disappointing. But I kept talking with her for a few more minutes, I couldn't believe that was all she was going to do! She looked at my blood sugar test results and said other than the one high one, I was very well under control. And I knew exactly what caused that one 150, it was a half cup of macaroni and cheese that I didn't think was big enough to bother me. She mentioned that there's a blood test I could take (a hemoglobin something-or-other) that would tell her if my sugar had basically been in complete control for the last 2 weeks. If it was good, then I wouldn't have to be induced at 38 weeks. (Truthfully, I was actually looking forward to that, just to get it over with). Instead they'd play the waiting game and probably would wait to induce at 41 weeks if needs be. (They don't like going over that with GD patients no matter how under control they are.) But it's very likely Myra would chose to come out before then on her own, obviously. She asked me if I wanted to take the test, i thought that was a little odd, if she wanted it she shouldn't need my permission. But anyway I said "I guess, if you want me to", so she ordered it. She said I'd only have to do it once, so why not do it now.

I also got her to tell me when they started doing checks for effacement and dialation - 39 weeks. Got her to order me some more testing strips for my blood sugar monitor. And talked to her about how to deal with "Labor and Delivery" when I have a problem and they're ignoring me, like what happened a week or so ago when I just was having a really bad day and wanted to be checked out. I had called L&D three times that day and they kept saying not to bother coming in because they couldn't do anything. She said to just ignore them if I'm worried and come in anyway. They HAVE to at least check me out and talk to a doctor before releasing me. If it'll give me peace of mind, just do it. She also said on weekday mornings till 11 there's an M.D. taking phone calls in the OB office I can talk to if I'm worried, instead of just the L&D nurses.

The last thing I asked her to explain to me was what we were doing next time, so Keith would know if he wanted to come with me (he was quite ticked he spend the entire morning with me and nothing happened this time). She said just the basic stuff and we'd look at the results from that blood test she ordered, but she'd call me ahead of time if it came back bad. That's basically it, so I have the feeling I'm going by myself next time so Keith doesn't miss any more work than he has to. He has that Daddy Boot Camp this coming Wednesday so he'll miss a half day of work for that as it is.

The next thing to look forward to is we start childbirth classes this Tuesday. I'm looking forward to that. I'll post again then.
