I'm finding it more disturbing as I research this. If you go to the
Hills homepage you are greeted by multiple banners stating that you can "Feed With Confidence" because all their foods are gluten-free. Hit the link under News Updates for Monday and you get a different story:
As a precautionary measure, we have withdrawn or recalled all Hill's products containing wheat gluten from the North American market. Science Diet® Savory Cuts® chunk and gravy style canned cat food and Prescription Diet® m/d® Feline dry are the only two products affected.
Nowhere on the website is the mention of the $100 credit for testing but I saw the forms that the vet filled out with my own eyes. On top of that, my vet had told me that the recall was simply because one of the ingredients in the m/d formula had come from the same supplier as the one that had supplied the tainted wheat gluten from Menu Foods. She still maintained that the m/d formula did not contain wheat gluten.
Obviously no one is getting the complete story from anyone involved. I'm progressively getting pissed that Hills seems to be trying to cover their asses on this one while putting on a heroic front of being above the whole fiasco. I am glad that the free testing is being made available to me, but I hope that other vets are offering it to their clients. As the m/d formula is prescription only, the vets who sell it must know what's going on. I also hope they are prepared for the wrath of pet owners should anything serious come of this.
