I know! I just finished ep 3 not too long ago! But I want to try to catch up as soon as possible before the series actually ends.
Welcome to France. And before you think the Host Club is doing their activities abroad (not that they're financially incapable, mind you), we begin this episode with France as the backdrop only to introduce the viewers to the guest of this week: Renge Houshakuji. And right off the bat, we see that she's not quite the normal Japanese expat in France (though what a normal expat is like in France, I wouldn't know).
Her father comes in amiably commenting on how much Renge likes the video game she's playing. Even when she states seriously that she will marry the animated character behind the screen, her father simply chuckles his approval. WUT? That actually scares me. So if she can't find the same looking guy, the dad would presumably pay someone to look like him, right? Damn.
Thankfully, dad shows Renge a picture he took with the family of his business partner while he was in Japan. Eyes wide in shock as her eyes come across the photograph, Renge dashes to her room, where she keeps a plane? Because the next thing her father knows, Renge has boarded the plane to Japan.
So let that be a lesson to rich single fathers of otakus everywhere. Never let your daughter have her own private jet in her room. You never know when they're going to run away from home, trying to marry a man she has never met. Fair warning.
In any case, we go back to Ouran High School, the normal place in comparison to Renge's life. We see Nekozawa feeling an ominous presence heading their way in the form of a plane that is heading straight to the music room. Seriously, what kind of jet is this?
The Host Club, as usual, is busy with their customers, this week taking a traditional theme with kimonos. Everyone is dressed very modestly, except of course Tamaki. He can never pass up the oppportunity to be bare chested in every opportunity. I was actually surprised he didn't try to skank up his suit last episode. In any case, Haruhi watches as Tamaki and the twins do their usual routine to please the guests. She sighs that she has to see that on a regular basis. Soon, Honey comes to her dragging his slipper-less foot. The next second, Mori comes putting the slipper right to Honey's foot in princess charming to Cinderella fashion. Honey hugs Mori, bringing much squeals to the customers. Haruhi, as usual, doesn't get it.
Kyouya calls her over to tell her that she has a steady flow of designations now. Which in Kyouya speech just means that business is good. Haruhi then wonders how exactly they are able to make money when they don't charge their customers anything for coming to the club. But Kyouya is not Kyouya if he's not business savvy. So he busts out his mighty iPad to show that the Host Club makes money off of merchandises such as photos. In fact, Haruhi's pictures are quickly selling out like hot cakes. Haruhi feels another breach of privacy.
Kyouya: If you don't like it, find some other way to pay your debts then.
Unable to to counter that logic, Haruhi grumbles to herself.
Haruhi:0 Kyouya:1
Tamaki then bounds over to Haruhi, telling her that he has saved some of his pictures (of the prince theme) for her to keep under her pillow so she can dream of him (seriously, if he was a real person? My only answer is a restraining order). Haruhi vehemently refuses. He asks why. She pushes him away as he goes to hug her.
The disgust of this exchange is practically dripping from Renge as she watches through the small opening at the door. Haruhi is the first to notice her presence and Tamaki quickly approaches to welcome her to his prince-liness. Her response?
As much as I think that Renge is a nutjob, I have to feel the satisfaction of someone doing that to Tamaki. The boy needs an ego check.
Which leads to much applause from the members for Renge's 3 insult attack.
Tamaki: 0 Renge: 3
When Kyouya comes over to observe the commotion, he glances at Renge, who lights up like a Christmas tree and proceeds to hug her one and only prince. Slightly confused but recognizing her as the important daughter of a family business partner, he accepts the attention. (Of course, he's also a host, so I'm sure he can take a bit of hugging.)
Tamaki continues to be sullen, rocking in his heels with a dark cloud over his head, apart from the rest of the members who are now sitting on the couch circling Renge. The members are introduced to Renge as Kyouya's fiancee. The members are shocked, while Kyouya explains simply that she is the daughter of a business partner and while he has seen her pictures, this is the first time he has met her face to face.
Renge, on the other hand, knows exactly who Kyouya is. He's the man who loves the flowers that are ignored by others. And picks up abandoned kitties on the street. All while being basked in sparkles and glow. Kyouya is a man whose heart is pure-white like a newly laundered sheet (of all things, a sheet?)
After listening to this, even Kyouya lifts his head from his hand and look up in surprise (which is hilarious in and of itself). The other members pause for a second before shaking their hands and heads vehemently, knowing Kyouya is probably as close to pure-white newly laundered sheet as black is close to white.
But Renge is steadfast in her belief. Why? Because Kyouya is exactly the projection of her favorite character in the game she plays. There is no way she could be wrong, and she busts out a picture, which in my opinion is the equivalent of Tamaki's Kuma-chan picture. At this, it finally dawns on Kyouya what is going on. Renge has superimposed his face onto her favorite character. Basically, long story short, Renge is an otaku!
It's kinda scary actually how well his face DOES fit onto the anime picture version. Someone please save me from this Kyouya madness, I can't seem to see anyone else nor do I want to. In any case, the other members start to complain to oka-san about Renge and what to do with her. Kyouya tells them that since she's the daughter of an important business partner (how many times do I have to keep saying that today?!), they should just bear with it for now. So the boys pout. But wait a minute....
Just in case you're wondering. Those are smiles of conspiracy. They realize that indulging Renge should be Haruhi's job. That way, it can be the perfect excuse for Haruhi to spend time with another girl, thus making her do girly things. I do think I need to keep ignoring the fact that she's only 16 and the oldest of the guys are 10 years older.... *chants* it's not pedophilic *chants*
So off they go to the kitchen, because Renge wants to make chocolates and cookies for Kyouya. Haruhi was about to say that they don't have the keys to the kitchen when Kyouya pulls out a bundle of keys that apparently correspond to every single room at the school. Unfortunately, Renge burns the chocolate and somehow makes expanding cream.
Yet, despite the mess and tragedy, what the other boys actually see in their vision is this. LOL.
Shamelessly, Renge brought her burnt cookies into the music room, insulting Tamaki for being a fake prince as she makes a beeline toward Kyouya. For those keeping score, it's Renge:4 and Tamaki:0.
Hearing the words cookies, Honey skips over to Renge to ask for one. Instead, he was faced with inedible crap. Before he could say anything more, Renge threatens him straight into Mori's arms. Haruhi quips from the back that the cookies she has in her hands are fine, though, if they want to try it. She picks one up and takes a bite. The twins come and tease her, stealing the bitten cookie while the other picks the crumb off of Haruhi's mouth. Otou-san can only wail and chase the twins. Mori is busy soothing Honey, and chaos ensues as Renge looks on disapprovingly.
She declares all of their characters boring and accuses them of trying to ruin Kyouya's business. LOL. In any case, she changes all of their persoanlity, starting with Honey. He is only pretending to be cute. Inside, he's actually a fiend. Mori is actually is a super masochist.
The twins are troubled basketball players who are upset over people being unable to tell them apart. And Haruhi is a poor scholarship student who gets bullied a lot.
Finally, Tamaki the prince is too lonely. He simply broods and gaze all day. While the others groan, Tamaki takes his role enthusiastically, thinking that the role of the lonely dramatic prince is just right for him (ignoring all the objections around him). He even asks for pointers from Renge.
And Kyouya? Well, he's perfect. Doesn't need to change a thing. Quite frankly, while I think Renge's bonkers, I'd have to concede on this point. Have a picture of him eating a cookie (Haruhi's cookie, mind you)
So the filming begins! Yes, Renge has brought a filming crew from Hollywood to bring her perfect characters into real life. Wait, no, she's changing real life into the screen. We see the twins playing basketball until one of them is injured. The crowd starts to worry albeit not knowing which of the twins is hurt (it's Kaoru). Then, as Hikaru supports Kaoru while they're walking outside (even though previously he had been on a stretcher), they come across Tamaki, who's in full on brooding mode, telling the twins how nice it must be to have someone who is always there for you. He has no one who can understand him.
Although, to be fair Tamaki, it is mighty hard to relate to you when you're acting over the top all the time...just sayin'
Then the screen cuts to a scene where Haruhi is running and being chased... by Honey and Mori. ROFL. Why is that so hilarious? Anyway, Honey bullies Haruhi, insulting her low class and wealth. When Mori tells him to stop, Honey simply tells him to shut his trap lest he wants to get hurt again. HAHAHA. Then, right when he's probably supposed to smirk evilly, Honey can't take it anymore and runs toward Haruhi, apologizing for all the mean things he said and assuring her that he means none of it.
Renge yells "cut", angrily berating Honey for not sticking to the script. The members then complain to each other as Renge continues to scold Honey. Only Tamaki cheerfully runs to Renge asking for a critique on his performance. Adding more "shadow" to the character, perhaps? And of course, at the mention of shadows, Nekozawa appears and freaks Tamaki out. Don't ask for what you can't handle, Tamaki.
Then Renge asks Haruhi to join her in meeting some people she found who would be perfect to play the bullies in the movie. Except, they're real bullies. And they are now insulted that their faces are called wicked and villainous. The bullies push, Haruhi covers, and metal pipes fall.
With his Haruhi senses tingling, Tamaki comes to the rescue and confronts the 3 bullies who easily got scared and runs away. Tamaki goes to check and see if Haruhi is okay since she is covering her face, only to discover a single tear running down her cheek. Startled after hearing her say "it hurts", Tamaki is all gentleness and worry until she shows the contact lens that fell out of her eye, which is the cause of the pain and tear. ROFL. I love Haruhi.
It is then that Renge, awestruck, asks the cameraman if he had managed to capture the scene, since it was perfect, sans the contacts part. At that moment as she gushes over the beautiful scene, Kyouya comes over with a fist-sized rock to shatter the camera lens. He tells her to stop doing things that may harm his members. Because it frustrates him. Aww, is that Kyouya-speak for "I was worried about Haruhi"?
In any case, Renge is shocked and confused. Her Kyouya-sama would have patted her head and tell her it's okay. He would never scold her. Tamaki then points out the obvious words that everyone has been saying in the beginning. That's not Kyouya dufus! Okay, so maybe the dufus part is from me.
Renge is heartbroken and runs away, with Haruhi chasing after her. As she cries on the stairs (no better place to cry, perhaps? Not knowing the school grounds well enough yet?), her beloved picture of the Kyouya-like game character flies away due to the wind, landing in the principal's room. Haruhi goes with Renge to ask for the keys to the room, but seeing as the director is not present, they are not allowed inside.
Renge thinks that it's her punishment for being foolish (REALLY? over a picture of a fictional character?). She understands that there is a difference between real life and games. But is it so wrong to dream? (uh...)
Haruhi kindly tells her that it is not wrong to dream. However, aren't people interesting BECAUSE they're unpredictable? Not quite understanding what she means, Renge simply looks confused until the Host Club members show up from the end of the corridor, heading toward them cat-walk style and proving Haruhi's point.
Tamaki said that they saw what happened and that they're here to help her get her picture back (SERIOUSLY! It's a picture!). Renge thinks it's useless because the room is locked and they don't have a key. Then, Kyouya takes the large bundle of keys from his inside pocket and tells her that he knew something like this would happen so he had the keys made. Tamaki tells Renge that if Kyouya was really as pure-white as Renge has envisioned, Renge would never have gotten her picture back. Renge finally learns her lesson as she writes back to her dad about these interesting people she met.
So life returns back to normal in Ouran Host Club. They all sit in front of the TV (except for Kyouya) and are watching the movie they made. Haruhi thought that the camera lens was broken. Kyouya says that he had saved the stuff inside. The filming was done anyway. Flabbergasted, Haruhi approaches Kyouya and the mountain of DVDs, asking him if this was his plan all along. Why of course it is. Filming with professional crew without the cost.
Tamaki then calls Haruhi to the TV as his scene comes up. Admiring himself on the screen, he wonders out loud whether he should maintain the shadowy image a little bit longer. Haruhi simply states that he shouldn't because Tamaki is fine just the way he is. This comment earns her the sight of his popped out heart being shot by the arrow.
The other members laugh good-naturedly at Tamaki for getting his heart shot again, while Haruhi complains to the camera that if he added "shadows" to his list of quirkiness, it would simply cause more trouble to her. And another Ouran day ends.
Note:
I have to say that one of the things I really like about Ouran is everything the directing. Discounting all the CG effects (which are done very well and effectively without being distracting), I love how shots of the Host Club members have all of their faces shown. It's like constantly posing to take a picture but doing it so seamlessly. For instance:
It's like they have markers on the floor to show where they should stand. It's really nice. I like being able to see all of them on the shot. It also shows that while Tamaki and Haruhi are the main characters, with the twins and Kyouya being more secondary (esp with this drama making Kyouya as the second male lead), Mori and Honey are just as important and they have to be shown.
Now, with OTP talk, I've always been one to not argue with the canon OTP of a manga or anime. In general, I've always accepted the canon (I have severe second-male leads on many dramas though). Ouran the anime is no exception. I love Tamaki and Haruhi together in the anime (and also in the drama) but really? When you keep giving us two shots of the two of them like these
How can I NOT ship these two together? I shall ignore that they're 9 years apart with her not even being of legal age yet, but PLEASE someone make a drama with the two of them as leads. Preferably with the same type of characters as these.
Basically, make an AU version of Ouran where they ARE the canon OTP.
What's even crazy is that they're not even SUPPOSED to be an OTP. Gosh Daito Shunsuke, I think I love you.
