Voltron S8
Did I just marathon all of Voltron S8 and cry like a big weenie? You bet I did. Thoughts below the cut, but overall, I am pleased.
-Lots of use of flashbacks this season, which is a little cheap as a storytelling device but I know they're working within budget/time constraints so it's forgivable. And it was used well in E2, where it became tricky to tell what was happening in the present and what was Honerva remembering the past, as a reflection of how distorted her thoughts are.
-Not enough Shiro imo but they could have made the entire season just about Shiro and I'd still feel that way so I'm biased, heh.
-The two mid-season break episodes ('Day Forty-Seven' and 'Clear Day') were both a lot of fun, def some of my favorite break episodes along with the space mall. Shiro getting crazy competitive over arm-wrestling? Amazing. Also happy to see a little bit of Atlas slice of life.
-Confession: Lance was my least favorite of the paladins at the start - I didn't actively dislike him, but he had a kind of obnoxious personality and I like all the other paladins more, but he really grew on me last season and this season as he matured. He and Keith having a heart-to-heart = fantastic.
-Combined Altas-Voltron was some Gundam-ass shit and I love it. Also because it meant Shiro was part of Voltron again ;)
-I'm kind of glad Allura absorbing the dark entity ended up being the right choice? Just because of how against trope it was (not that tropes are bad but 'bad decision everyone else has to clean up after' is kind of old). But without it, she wouldn't have had the knowledge and memories to reach out to Honerva at the end.
-Pretty solid ending, I think - striking the balance between giving enough closure that it feels satisfying while also leaving things open enough to give a sense of continuation is hard, and this was one of the better examples, I think.
-Would it have been nice for my ship to be canon? Yeah, of course. But 'let Shiro be happy' was a big hope for me and his presumably-husband is so much of a non-entity that it's pretty easy to get around. Go on fandom, I know you can do it.
-I welcome and appreciate the coming onslaught of 'Allura is back' fics, because I know fandom and look, that's dead-easy to work around. I nearly thought they were going to in the epilogue, when the lions lit up.
