MERRY CHRISTMAS, ONE AND ALL!!
Um, yes, I'm aware how terribly belated this is, but the Romans have still got their Christmas lights strung up, so we should do as they do, and make it count, right? Time and space tends to blend together after being on the road two weeks, struggling with suitcases and maps and language inflections. I've been spending my twelve days of Christmas getting marooned in a cafe off Calle dei Orbi by the acqua alta, trying to mime the words °phonebook° and "oh god help me, I think my friend just got carried off by the current" to the perplexed waiting staff, visiting the Uffizi in Florence and exiting their Caravaggio exhibit awestruck and just traumatized enough, staring out over Ponte Vecchio at night, after having imbibed a bit too much wine at dinner, wondering when and how I'm ever going to go home.
And I don't mean by car or train or rickshaw or what have you. I wonder if we're so changed by our experiences, year after year, how do we still fit the spaces we occupied the season before? The Venetians have their flood chimes, the Florentines their art, the Romans their ruins and their history. What do I have this year that I feel I had last Christmas, that told me who I am and where I am, when to pull on the gum boots and what to be proud of? I've got... a suitcase full of clothes, ferry tickets to Barcelona in two days. I called my family from a phone booth on Christmas Day. I wonder if I'll only know how much I have changed since leaving, when I go back home and realize I don't fit anymore.
Anyways, my 20 minutes of internet are just about up. Buon natale from Roma, my lovelies. I miss you all so much, and I hope you're having a wonderful holiday season ♥.
