Title: The End is Where We Begin Beta(s):ladyofgallifrey Song Titles(s): Dream a Little Dream of Me Rating: PG Characters/Pairing: Nine/Rose, Ten/Rose A/N: Written for alex_caligari as part of the Carol-A-Thon 2009.
Some will pause for a moment; regard it first with bemusement, then thoughtfulness with a head tipped, and though they'll eventually continue on their way and never remember it again, all will have strange, brilliant dreams that night.
I love the little detail of the people passing by and the effect it has on them, giving them wonderful dreams. It's a great idea and it ties in nicely to the song and the way parts of this are like a dream, that has been dreamt, or is yet to be dreamed of. (if that makes any coherent sense) The symmetry, and the way you brought the dream concept and the snippet of lyrics through the whole piece was brilliant.
He chokes over something. Maybe a laugh. Jackie's turkey, most likely. "She loved you."
The tips of the other's lips quirk up. "Coward. Every single time." His expression turns thoughtful. "Maybe you'll be the brave one, for a change."
The Doctor laughs. The radio tunes down - linger til dawn, dear. "Doubt it. 'Cause I'm you, aren't I?"
Yes, I'm quoting this whole exchange between Nine and Ten because it's marvelous. I adore fics where different incarnations of the Doctor talk to each other. Even if this isn't so much real as it is Ten finalizing his regeneration by saying good by to Nine, it's perfect. It's a great bit of closure for Nine, and the fact that he acknowledges how Rose feels and knows he's still a damn coward is so very in character. (and the part about choking on Jackie's turkey - *lolz*)
There is the ghost of the weight of it, still thrown across his shoulders. It was meant to be a metaphor for war and survivor's guilt, and inexplicably somewhere along the way, it became hers.
He’s watching the girl in his arms, and he knows the expression well. These things, plaintive and deep rooted, must carry across incarnations; those strange, cataclysmic intersections of love and hope and desire and fear. They are not that different after all.
♥ Freakin' A there are not enough ♥s for me to throw at these two parts. The way you've described Nine is incredible. I also love the implication that his burdens became Rose's through their shared strife and survival and adventures, plus the lingering guilt that she probably feels because she caused his regeneration. I like the idea that they are not so different after all, having gone through so much together. It's something I had contemplated before, but I have never seen it addressed so lovely and poignantly as in these few sentences. I bolded that phrase because you have a gift for words that I can't help but envy. If you don't mind I'd like to save that little part, as it's sort of inspired a fic idea.
AND THE END OMG. How much do I love the way you gave Ten peace and comfort in his last moments? ♥ LIKE A WHOLE EFFING LOT. (i'm so descriptive tonight)
The last strains of his song dissipate in the Christmas evening. A girl walks away without knowing it, towards a brighter future and a man she'll meet again, for the first time, always. Forever - she said once, and made them more than just words.
She's yet to, but somewhere, she'll start to dream of him again.
It's sad but I'm filled with so much hope and joy, because Rose is going to meet him again! It's my favorite timey wimey idea, that they really do have forever because they are always out there, somewhere in time, meeting and parting, having adventures and tea and running endlessly... *happy sigh*
I am meming this for re-reading after part 2 this week, because this is the way it should end for every Doctor, with peace and love and a clean slate for the future.
MY HEART IS SO HAPPY TO HAVE FOUND THIS FIC. ♥ NOT AS HAPPY AS MINE AFTER READING THIS LOVELIEST OF COMMENTS, I ASSURE YOU ♥.
It's a great idea and it ties in nicely to the song and the way parts of this are like a dream, that has been dreamt, or is yet to be dreamed of. Oooo, I'm so happy to hear that it tied into the song well :D. I actually had never heard Dream A Little Dream Of Me before getting the assignment, so after listening I kind of had difficulty grappling with the concept at first... It was such a lovely song, and suited for the prompt I'd been given, but I had no idea where to begin XD. But to hear it worked, and you liked it, makes me so glad *dances*.
I adore fics where different incarnations of the Doctor talk to each other. I love fics like that too! It's like a family reunion, but 10134x worse, because it's all different versions of you XD.
Even if this isn't so much real as it is Ten finalizing his regeneration by saying good by to Nine, it's perfect. It's a great bit of closure for Nine, and the fact that he acknowledges how Rose feels and knows he's still a damn coward is so very in character. As much as I loved the finale for S1, I wished that Nine and Rose could've had more closure before he regenerated. Even though he'll still be there, in a way, it's not - not him. But one of my favourite scenes from the episode was when he refuses to destroy the humans and says he chooses coward instead of killer when the Dalek Emperor taunts him... *sigh*. I thought it of him also passing on the torch to Ten - not just his role as Last of the Time Lords, but also his relationship with Rose, and wondering how he'd build upon those from there.
The way you've described Nine is incredible. I also love the implication that his burdens became Rose's through their shared strife and survival and adventures, plus the lingering guilt that she probably feels because she caused his regeneration. :D Yaaay! That's exactly what I'd wanted to portray, and I'm so, so happy you caught that ♥
I bolded that phrase because you have a gift for words that I can't help but envy. If you don't mind I'd like to save that little part, as it's sort of inspired a fic idea. *BLUSHES LIKE MAD*. Oh, thank you so much! And yes, please do! Any fic idea of yours is bound to be amazing, and I'm so flattered to have been of some kind of inspiration to you ♥.
It's sad but I'm filled with so much hope and joy, because Rose is going to meet him again! It's my favorite timey wimey idea, that they really do have forever because they are always out there, somewhere in time, meeting and parting, having adventures and tea and running endlessly ;___; I adore the timey-wimey concept too, and it'll be something I'll be clinging to when Pt.2 comes out on Friday...
YOU'RE MARVELOUS, YOU REALLY, REALLY ARE. This is probably the nicest, most amazing comment I've ever received, truly ♥. You have no idea how much this made my day. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! *showers you with love and hugs and ♥s*
