Why is PotO Such a Popular Set-up for Porn?

The "erotic" (in quotations because from what I've heard, it's downright disgusting) "novel" (in quotations because I've heard that there's more sex than plot or that the plot is sex) Unmasqued was wanked on

Why did I think of this travesty of a book and this gruesome subject?

If you are a fan of the musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber, as you know, is working on a sequel to his most famous show.  It's called "Once Upon Another Time."  This got snarked in
phanwank as well and someone said they were thinking of potential song titles.  The novel on which this musical is based is considered by many Phantom fans to be the worst Phantom-related writing ever (unless you include the phanbrat fan fiction).  In the novel, which is a sequel to Webber's musical, everything set up in the finale is thrown out the window.  I've read that there are a lot of plot elements that won't make for a very enchanting musical.  This is what got me thinking about all of the bad porn and why people think The Phantom of the Opera has so much potential.

I don't like porn, so I don't know much about popular scenarios, but I assume the pretty, virginal, delusional opera singer and her deformed, ugly, old voice tutor resonates with some people?  Unmasqued is based on the movie of all things, so it's just two pretty people having a lot of disgusting sex.

I don't get the M-rated fan fictions.  They're mostly movie-based, which means people are fantasizing about the least Phantomy Phantom and a girl who looks fifteen dressed in old-fashioned underwear.  This is good news for people who like period porn?

I also remember reading in the archives about a porn video that was barely PotO-based.  Some guy who lived under an opera house has sex with some opera singers.  Honestly, I can see the romantic appeal of PotO, but not porn.  I guess there are some people who just like to write smutty things about any fandom (Harry Potter has the most disturbing smut of any, I swear, and the most badly-written).

Perhaps it's just the meek heroine/demented-but-loving villain thing.  I'm not an expert or even an amateur.  I just wonder why what was originally a horror novel became a popular porn scenario.

Also, note: I have nothing against sex, but I think smut is usually too badly-written for my taste and it usually isn't that sexy.
