Oh the stories we'll have

So, it's been a while since I've updated here, and I'm not quite sure if anyone still reads this.  Regardless, I suppose I'll take a few minutes to make make a brief update about my life so far.

First of all, my board exam (COMLEX) is approaching in about a little more than a week.  While I feel confident enough that I will indeed pass the exam, that's not enough for me.  I want to do amazing on this exam, and so I've been studying with that intent in mind.  It's probably because of this insecure sense of feeling "ready" for this exam that I've been pushing my exam date further and further back closer to rotations contrary to some advice that a third year had given me.   It would be amazing to have a few days of free time before my rotations begin, but I think I'll have more free time during rotations either way.   At least that's what I've heard anyways.  I'm super excited about starting rotations!  I can't wait to actually apply everything that I've learned in these first two years and actually treat people!

Just last night, I was hanging out with my cousins and my brother because it happened to be Bubu's 21st birthday.  No, we weren't celebrating at some bar or anything like that.  Haha, instead we went on a search for a Starbucks that apparently gave away free coffee to people on their birthdays.  (Bubu is a coffee-addict)  On the way to our destination (and alternative destinations as the situation warranted), I started asking my 12-year-old some questions about what kids his age are into these days because I wanted to have a good idea of conversation I may encounter while on my pediatrics rotations.  Not surprisingly, his answer was "Justin Bieber."   Also, apparently the kids these days have a fad involving shaped rubber bands.  *Shrug*  Ah, kids these days.   I feel like I'm getting so old.  :-/

Back at Bubu's we watched a movie...it was a chick flick called Dear John.   It got me thinking about 9/11 among other things.  For one thing, I'm pretty sure that everyone remembers what they were doing when they heard about the world trade center.  It's just like how the old folks remember what they were doing during the Kennedy assassination.  It's going to be ingrained the history books for sure, and I can just imagine us talking to our children about that day while they pay attention with slight interest.  That's the difference from living and experiencing something and just reading about it in the history books.   I mean, surely, we can read so much and memorize all these factoids and stories, but there's a different level of importance and value to these seemingly trivial bits of information when it comes to telling a story or conveying some knowledge that comes from experience.  I feel like I remember things best when they are associated with such passion and relevance to the reality of things.  While I study all these case presentations and treatment managements, the anticipation of actually seeing the patients that present in the context of these difficult questions is both slightly unnerving while at the same time exciting.

Oh, I definitely can't wait!  But yeah, I've already spent too much time writing for today.   Back to studying!  :-)
