Well, friends - it's been an odd summer indeed. I can't say that it was a bad one, because it wasn't. I had an intoxicating birthday and birthday party. I took a whirlwind trip to Chicago with Ashley to visit Lindsay. We met three best gay friends in Boystown and then went to Tastefest. I went to the Ann Arbor Arts Festival and visited with Heidi and Georgia, then later went to the Bang! and had a ridiculously good time. I went camping in Manistee with my family and dad's high school friends, which was a much-needed relaxing, calming weekend. I went swimming at Brooke's cottage, reconnected with the Emilys and Kathryn and in general got to do many fun things.
But it was all so strange because for the first time in my life, I had to face rejection with a bold face. I've always had a relatively easy time getting a job (except for the no callback from Barnes & Noble - you can suck it!) But this summer, when I received my first, "thanks for the interest, but we've gone with someone else," it was a low blow. Just very odd. I don't like when people don't like me!
But last week, my old boss from the newspaper I interned at two summers ago called me to offer a job. They bought the newspaper in Lowell, and he wanted me to be there to make a fresh start and give it some loving. The old newspaper had stuff like, "So and so had a birthday this week and it was awesome" and "Fourteen gals from the Class of '65 gathered together at a local restaurant to catch up." You know, hard-hitting. So, I took it. Not only was I like, uhhh, I need a job, but it also sounded pretty sweet.
And the sweetest part? Apparently, I'm the editor. Like, when I get a business card printed, it'll read, "Molly Benningfield, The Lowell Ledger, Editor." Can you believe it? How surreal. I'm taking over the small staff. I have people coming up to me asking what we should put in and how this should look. And all I'm thinking is, dude - I just graduated from college! I'm also the sports girl, which is a job in itself - I have to coordinate all of the Lowell High School sports, and cover them and take pictures and layout the pages (thankfully I took a design class at MSU - oh wait, I DIDN'T! Will need to do an indesign tutorial, I think.) But I like it. I covered the football game Friday night, and the soccer game last night. It's ridiculously fun. I love the look people give me when they see that I'M the sports editor.
So, that's the news from my life. It's nice to have something to hold onto. It's been too long of a summer feeling unimportant and unoriginal. I like where I'm at.
