The Elements of Style

Jan 21, 2008 22:32

So, I never got a chance to talk about my favorite Christmas gift.
I got a few and I like many of them.
Including Seasons 5 and 7 of Buffy, finishing off the set (At last! My right arm is complete again!)
But it's not my absolute favorite of the year. This one requires a little set-up.

Something I always seem to be behind the curve on is fashion.
Most of my attire adventures are hit or miss. I've never really focused on my clothes much.
But as any actress knows, it becomes part of your job, whether you like it or not.

So, when I'm trying to figure out what works and what doesn't for me, I go to my guru.
My best friend Myriam.
And we've been plotting for years about what to do with Jason if we ever got our hands on him for an afternoon.
Which he now says he will allow. (He wants to venture outside the khaki 'verse.)

Anyway, Myriam got me for Christmas a Starbucks card (perfect for the weary mommy) and a book called The Little Dictionary of Fashion by Christian Dior. A little pink book about fashion. I mean, honestly people. Does it get girlier than that?

Now, if I would describe my style as anything, it's classic. And this was perfect for me.
The dictionary is straight out of the 50's, at the height of popularity for the House of Dior.
And I love the definitions of things.
Some, granted, are outdated. I mean, the need for a "day frock" has really gone down, you know.
But some, like Dior itself, are timeless.
As I read them, I can practically hear them being recited with an English or even a lilting French accent.

Par example: Elegance
This is a word that would need a book to give it its right definition!
I will only say now that elegance must be the right combination of distinction, naturalness, care and simplicity.
Outside this, believe me there is no elegance. Only pretension.

This is my favorite part.

Elegance is not dependent on money. Of the four things I have mentioned above, the most important of all is care.
Care in choosing your clothes. Care in wearing them. Care in keeping them.

Now, since I'm not much of a clotheshorse, I never really thought about the care of my clothes.
But now, I'm thinking about it. And it's more important now than ever.
I've never been one to be seduced by the "latest thing." But taking care of the clothes you look good in, only makes sense.
So, this has become my new fashion bible. I will commit parts to memory.
And carry this knowledge with me on every new shopping venture.
And this is just one of the reasons why I love Myriam.

There. I've gotten all of that out of my system.
