Hey Bay Area folks!

I'm coming to visit Berkeley and Stanford Nov 28-Dec 2. Two questions:

1. Is there some sensible way I can get from Berkeley to Stanford without having to rent a car? To and from the airport should be no problem but not sure what to do about the middle leg.

2. I'll be free all day on Saturday Dec 1 if anyone wants to hang out.

^ what he said! It'll take awhile, but it would work.

I would definitely be up for snagging a meal of some sort, I won't be able to hang out for an extended period of time though. Thesis proposal due the following week!

How late in the evening will this method work?

Also, Wedge, how about dinner on that Saturday?

wellll that depends on whether you manage to catch the train at the appointed time. Caltrain is sporadic after 7pm or so, and there are no more expresses either. So you will have to be sure to plan your BART ride carefully. (I know as much as you do about BART, so I can't offer any advice about it.)

The southbound schedule for Caltrain is here:
http://www.caltrain.com/timetable.html#weekday-southbound
map is here:
http://www.caltrain.com/caltrain_map.html

I'm assuming you'd take BART to the start of the line at 22nd st. Stanford is at (surprise) University Ave, Palo Alto. After 7pm, the Caltrain trip will take you about an hour. If you can get an express before that, it can be as short as 30 minutes. Last train leave SF at midnight.

Saturday would be good for dinner! Would you be coming from Berkeley that day?

addendum to wedge's post...

The Caltrain actually starts at 4th and King (not 22nd St; the map is a bit awkward). You can get out of the BART in downtown SF and walk to the Caltrain (10-15 minutes walking), but it is easier to take the BART to Millbrae, where you can switch to the Caltrain directly (same station). (This may actually be slower than walking through downtown, but it is much simpler.)

So, you want: Berkeley -> BART -> Millbrae -> Caltrain -> Stanford

The online Caltrain/BART schedules should give you the timing info.
