House of Dying Flaggers (er, Flying Daggers)

Saw House of Flying Daggers last night. I gave it 3 stars out of 5 on Netflix, though would have given 3.5 if possible. The story was pretty much 'Romeo and Juliet' with fewer characters, less complexity, and a whole lot of those physics-defying Chinese martial arts we have grown so accustomed to. But, visually, it was pure candy.

As my sister said about Hero, "It was beautiful! It looked like a screensaver." There was much use of the color green, in shades I particularly like. Plus, they do show a remarkable number of ways to kill someone with bamboo, which, I suppose, shows a certain creative genius.

Especially beautiful was Takeshi Kaneshiro, who might well be Asia's answer to Orlando Bloom, (gals fond of bondage should also view this photo), though perhaps I only say that because his character has long silky hair and did this trick where he fired four arrows in rapid succession. Bored fangirls (or gay guys), I suggest a Google image search on Takeshi if you're after some eye candy this afternoon. [Edit: or better yet, try this fan site, which has a gallery so huge you will actually get tired of looking at the pretty boy. Maybe.]

Oh, and for the boys (or lesbians), I imagine Ziyi Zhang - a.k.a. Zhang Ziyi, depending who you ask - isn't bad to look at either.
