Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

Christmas was certainly interesting this year...

it started with my trip to Rob's grandparents' house. we were definitely running behind in getting there and didn't arrive until around 10 Saturday evening. we went with his whole family to see this trail of lights which was pretty cool. Then we stayed up the good part of the night while I watched Rob and his stepdad put together little hot wheels motorcycles for the nephews. Anyway, with the uncle who kept making inappropriate sexual remarks, and the grandfather who kept calling me Audrey, Connie or Holly, it was an interesting 12 hours. So Christmas Eve around 11, Rob and I leave to go to my grandparents house. We get back a little before 4 with just enough time for both of us to change and get to my grandparents house for dinner. So we rush to get ready and as I'm grabbing stuff from my house I ask my dad when he and my mother are leaving, and he tells me she's not coming. So I go to talk to her and she tells me that she's too tired because of all of the things she's had to do over the past couple of days and her ears are bothering her and all of this. So I immediately feel guilty and get really upset... I call my sister who's at my grandparents and she gets upset. When I get there my whole family is in an uproar because my cousin is getting engaged and she's the first grandaughter in the family to do so. But the best part of the evening was right before the family dinner. We're standing around the table and my grandfather is about to pray when my grandmother says "well, it looks like everyone's here...(pause) except for Diane."(my mother) Then there is this great awkward moment... and to break the silence I say in a true Taladega Nights moment, "Dear baby Jesus..." after which my sister starts laughing, Rob punches her, my aunt starts laughing and my grandmother starts crying. Beautiful. So, the evening continues and my sister is talking to my aunt, who is actually my mom's best friend who might as well be part of the family, and she tells my sister that she's planning to spend Christmas day alone. So my sister invites her over for Christmas day... skipping to later that evening when we all come home to my mother... my sister tells my mom she invited my aunt over and my mom says its ok, but obviously doesn't mean that. Christmas morning my aunt comes over and we all sit around and eat cinnamon rolls. Then my cousin who just got engaged comes over to tell my mom that she's engaged per request of my father who knew my mom would get pissed off if she wasn't told by my cousin. So as they're talking my aunt and sister and I decide to play a rousing game of trivial pursuit. Later my cousin leaves and my mom tells us that we're being way too loud and hurting her ears. She then goes into her room. The rest of us keep playing our game for about another hour. Just when we finish my mom comes out and tells us we've still been hurting her ears and she tells us she's leaving. Its about 3:30 at this point and my aunt feels uncomfortable and leaves for the day. My sister goes to take a nap, and I decide I need out of the house. So I shower and take my time getting ready to go over to Rob's because he is having a little Christmas party. About 7:30 I hear my mom come in and ask my dad to help her with something. (He tells me later that she asked him to take off the diamond necklace my sister and I got her and give it back to us.) So, I leave to go to Rob's where I have a great time. Later, I get a text from my sister who tells me that my mom freaked out and made my dad throw away all of the Christmas dinner, none of which had yet been touched. My sister who paid for and made all of the meal was really upset and hurt and when I came back both of us were hungry having eaten little more than cinnamon rolls and chex mix that day. Later that night around 1, my mom comes out of her bedroom and calls me to come out and talk with her. She starts yelling at me for all of the things I did that day... not watching Christmas movies with her, having my aunt over, being too loud, etc. Then she yelled at my sister and made her feel like shit. It was awful. I finally got up and went to my room. Luckily I keep missing my mom and haven't seen her since then. I don't know how my father stands her, especially when its just the two of them living together.

So that was my Christmas. Hopefully the new year will be better... :)
