Halfway through! :)
December 26: How do you take your coffee? for
wendy Many, many ways! For lo, I am dedicated to coffee.
About 98% of the time, I'm pretty basic - just coffee and enough cream to lighten it up:
But, on holidays or special occasions (today I am on vacation!) I'll sometimes have something seasonal. Today it's a pumpkin mocha from Dunkin Donuts. If it were a Starbucks day, it would probably be a venti mocha with 1 pump of cinnamon dolce, or possibly a salted caramel mocha, or possibly a creme brûlée latte.
If I'm out to breakfast at a restaurant, it's still coffee with cream, but every now and then I'll add a bit of sugar.
And if I'm at work, where I don't trust the little cream cups that are often out of date, and the only alternative is powder, I usually just take my coffee black, like my boss's heart.
December 27: 10 songs that make you happy, for
poisontaster Most songs that make me really happy are songs that I kind of vid in my head. Usually they're not songs I would actually vid - but they're associated with a specific fandom for me, and make me think of a specific pairing. For fun, I'm going to listen to each of these before I write about what they mean to me. :)
So, these first two songs, I want to add a little preface. When I first started listening to this album (Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces, by Seether) it was just something that popped up on iTunes and had an interesting title, so I bought it. These two songs were instant Supernatural vid songs in my head, and I made extensive plans to vid them. But then I did some reading, and learned that a lot of this album is wrapped up in the depression and eventual suicide of the lead vocalist's brother. In particular,
Rise Above This was written to help bring his brother out of a depression. I felt hugely (and some of my friends said, weirdly) guilty about mapping a fictional character's dead-brother-trauma onto a song written by a guy who's brother actually committed suicide, and scrapped all my plans to vid either of these two songs. But I can't help the brain-vidding when I listen to them, or that they mean something different to me than what was intended. So, the caveat here is - these are Sam and Dean songs to me, and as such, they make me happy - even though that makes me feel like the very worst person of people.
(A further caveat is that almost all of these songs are somehow Sam and Dean songs to me. What can I say, I've been in this fandom for 8 years now. That's just where my head goes.)
1. Rise Above This (Seether). This is a Sam and Dean song to me, from Sam's POV, set between 3rd and 4th seasons, when Dean was in Hell. To me it's all about Sam's search for Dean, his desperation, his love, and his struggle to hold onto himself while trying to get Dean back. It's also about his certainty that he was strong enough to come back from whatever he had to do to save his brother.
2. 6 Gun Quota (Seether). I feel like if you could crack Dean Winchester's heart open, this is what you'd find. Constant, faithful, determined, cocky, desperate, yearning, resentful, tired, self-loathing, contained, seething. For me, this song is like the dark that underlies the light in Dean - the things he might say if he weren't such a caretaker at heart. Specifically, the line "it feels so good to be numb" reminds me of demon!Dean in Dream a Little Dream of Me.
3. Better Things (Dar Williams). I think of this song as a valentine to Sam and Dean from fandom. Or, I guess, from fans like me! I love when they get to relax a little and have some fun, tease each other, be excited about things. And I would love to for them to reach a point someday where they can have better things -- less worry, less responsibility, less pain and convict. This one I may actually vid one day - when there are enough clips of them loving life to fill up there and a half minutes. =D
4. The Only Way I Know (Jason Aldean). I first heard this song in May when I was staying at my Dad's place in Louisiana. At first I just liked the sound of it - but the longer it went on, the more it sounded like Sam and Dean's lives to me. It was Sam and Dean's lives with shades of the way John raised them, and how that molded them into these committed, relentless survival machines. This one I'm absolutely vidding, right now in fact. :)
5. Fighter (Christina Aguilera). And now for something completely different! I was listening to this on the radio not long after I saw the finale of season 3a of Teen Wolf, and now when I hear it, it's a song about Stiles, Scott and Allison overcoming all of their adversaries - some trusted, loved family members - to survive and keep their friends and their town safe. It's an ass-kicking anthem, and those three deserve it.
6. Everything is Alright (Motion City Soundtrack). This is a long-time favorite of mine. I love the upbeat to it, though it's the kind of upbeat that makes you think of amphetamines rather than just pure joy. The rhythm is pure joy - the message is a little darker. Right now I think of this as a Stilinski Family Feels song - about Stiles reassuring his father that he's okay, even though he's clearly into all kinds of dangerous bullshit. And also maybe about his father reassuring Stiles that he's okay, even though he's clearly freaked out, plus still deeply in mourning for his wife. Listening to the lyrics, I kind of get the idea that bits of it might not be particularly, uh, father-son friendly? But I don't care. The heart wants what the heart wants! <3
7. Only the Good Die Young (Billy Joel). I never had a pairing or show in mind when listening to this song until
this vid made it a Sonny/Vinnie song forever. It's fast and irreverent and just generally a blast, and I adore it.
8. You May be Right (Billy Joel). Also fast, irreverent and just generally a blast - plus it screams "Dean!" to me at the top of its lungs. Specifically, Dean to Sam. Way back in lie, 2nd Season of Supernatural, I had about half of a vid to this song on a timeline, but it fell apart due to lack of source that worked for me. Seven years LATER... maybe I should try again. SPN has enough source to do just about anything now. :)
9. You Belong with Me (Taylor Swift). So, the first time I heard this song, I just sort of generally liked the sound of it (I like the Taylor, sue me), but didn't listen much to the lyrics. Then I listened, and the timing was right, so it sort of became a... Stiles/Scott vid, in my head. And then, after a while, when I wasn't looking, it turned into a Stiles/Scott/Allison vid. Because Allison is apparently just that awesome. In generally, this song makes me want to sing. Also it helps that it's mostly in my range, so I can sing it (mostly) on key.
10.
Little Fuzzy Animals (Frank Hayes). One of my favorite filk classics, this is just weird and adorable and fun and as mentioned before, has the advantage of being totally singable by moi. ♫ The demon flies speak English and they love to scout ahead! <3 ♫<3 ♫<3
I've still got 7 days off so far (in red) - feel free to ask
more questions any time. :)
