Which TV shows did you let go of in 2018?When I first started thinking about this question, I couldn’t come up with an answer. I’m not watching very many shows right now, and as a result, I haven’t really given up on any of them this year. But after thinking about it, I realized that there’s one genre I’ve nearly completely abandoned: late night ( Read more... )

Maybe the world is so damn depressing that I just can’t work up enthusiasm. Or it could be that I feel overwhelmed by options in this age of great tv and can’t commit to trying anything, and can’t commit to finishing even things I like. Probably a combo of these.

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2018?

We had been watching Parks and Rec on dvd, and stopped watching at the end of the penultimate season. I can’t figure out why, but I don’t have any interest in finishing it. Same thing with Masterpiece’s Victoria and also Broadchurch. Gave up on House of Cards, for obvious reasons (man, I LOVE Kevin Spacey’s performances, but his sociopathic behavior has probably put an end to any re-watches for years, if not ever). I watched the first season of American Gods on my own but had a whipsaw response to it, and since Gillian Anderson is leaving I won’t be watching the rest.

We’re currently hung up mid-season 2 of Black Sails, but I really want to go back to that one at some point. Also want to eventually watch seasons 2-4 of Outlander, season 2 etc of The Americans, and season 2 of Westworld.

Which TV shows did you start watching in 2018?

Not much. We watched Season 1 of Stranger Things and really liked it, but not enough to watch any more. Rick and Morty is very inventive, but I’m not sure that black comedy combined with dysfunctional psychological horror can continue indefinitely. The Alienist was ok, but nothing outstanding. Little Drummer Girl was really good (I am so excited to watch Florence Pugh’s career develop and Michael Shannon was fantastic).

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2018? Why?

I have a huge list of ‘to check out’ tv, but I just don’t do anything about it. Penny Dreadful, Killing Eve, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, The Affair, Taboo, Billions, Atlanta, Preacher, Legion, Jessica Jones, Succession, The Crown, Mindhunter, and on and on (there’s a whole list of streaming stuff that I am interested in but don’t have access to b/c I still watch dvds).

Which TV show impressed you least in 2018?

For some reason the season 2 premiere of Broadchurch put us right off that show. It seemed lame and contrived, which is saying something considering the plot of the first season. We continue to love Archer, but I have to admit it has been losing steam the past couple years.

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2019?

I think the second season of Night Manager isn’t going to air until 2020, but if it shows up in 2019 I’m in. I’m hypothetically interested in:

I am the Night, Good Omens, Catch-22, His Dark Materials (James McAvoy, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Ruth Wilson!), Watchmen, Lovecraft Country, Big Little Lies, The Mandalorian (Star Wars spinoff), “Dracula” reboot from the “Sherlock” creators, Zachary Quinto-starring Joe Hill adaptation “NOS4A2. Probably a few I’ve forgotten and I won't have access to many of these shows anyway.

Which TV show do you think you might let go of in 2018 unless things significantly improve?

Probably n/a because I am not fannishly following any.

Which TV shows do you think you’ll never let go of no matter how crappy they get?

Game of Thrones and Archer. Suspect I’ll be in till the end.

As someone who loves Parks & Rec, I would say that the final season is good but not essential. I feel basically the same way about Stranger Things S2 - I liked it, but I wouldn't say it's a must-watch. As someone who will just stop watching shows that I generally like, I find this impulse completely sympathetic.

Oooh, I forgot about His Dark Materials. That's a great cast.
