Fall TV and general malaise

Oct 07, 2018 10:26

I didn't do a fall TV post this year the way I normally do, because...::shrug:: There's too much TV to fit into a tidy post anymore, and I don't care about most of it anyway. Here is the short list of things that I am watching ( Read more... )

I think I've bitched about this before on your journal, but that 'meh' response to media? I've been having that since around age 40. It's hard for me to tell if this is partly just mid-life consequence of having seen/read most, if not all, variants on themes that grabbed me in my youth; or if it is a response to my growing sense of existential despair at the state of the nation and the world. Initially I combated it with movies and tv by going more escapist and avoiding heavy subject matter, while simultaneously branching out in reading to much broader material than I read in my youth. This worked somewhat, at least for books. But after a few years, the malaise came back. Again, I'm not sure if it is poor luck/reading choices, or my actual mental state. This year has been a bit better, so maybe it was partly poor book choices. I still can't face most 'serious' films/tv though ( ... )

I'm a total political news junkie, so stepping away is hard, but I have managed to do so for the last few days, aside from Twitter, aka the Pit of Despair, which I didn't abandon but I did cut back on.

This year has had a lot of ups and downs in my real life (mostly downs, with a few bright spots), which I'm sure is definitely contributing to my sense of malaise, along with everything I see when I turn on the news. I don't expect to be fannish about things anymore, but I wish there were more shows that I looked forward to, just for the enjoyable distraction!

I know how you feel. I try to keep away from news, because I can take it anymore, and almost everything I try and start on tv is meh. Almost.

I did just start "The Good place" so I've got all two seasons ahead of me :)

Often i look for "other languages shows" on Netflix - they have problems that don't bother me that much and different perspectives..

I have an awful habit of playing games on my phone while I watch TV, which makes it impossible for me to watch anything with subtitles. Apparently, I have the attention span of a 12 year old.

I really hope you enjoy The Good Place! If you're not already spoiled, then avoid all spoilers!

I love that The Good Place is the one thing everyone I know unanimously loves. The Bad Place bringing everyone together! (That said, I am not yet absolutely wowed by the new season so far...)

And congrats on coming around to Bojack Horseman! A show that exists.

Reality is definitely the Bad Place right now, so it makes sense that we would all be escaping to The Good Place when we can. I'm very curious to see where they're going in S3 - I'm enjoying it, but it always seems to take a few episodes for me with this show to sort of settle into the season, maybe because they have so much plot to set up.

Bojack is A LOT.
