So, the current season of The X-Files is actually...good? I know, I can't believe it either! I would put episodes two and four up with some of the best of the series, especially ep 4, written by Darin Morgan. Episode three was a little rougher around the edges, but still enjoyable, and included
canon Mulder/Scully boning, not just innuendo, which might be a first.
BUT (you knew there had to be a "but," right?) there was also the first episode, which was a nonsensical narrative hot mess. And Chris Carter has an obsession with
Scully's reproductive system. Scully's been abducted, experimented on, had a daughter that she didn't know existed (who died), been told that she can't have children, had her eggs stored in Mulder's freezer (or something like that, I don't know, this was revealed in S8 or 9, I had stopped paying attention to the plot by then), had her miracle baby with Mulder (WE ALL ASSUMED) and then gave up the baby for adoption to protect him. But what really happened is that the Cigarette Smoking Man impregnated her (with SCIENCE, not rape, he assured Skinner when telling this story, which UGGGGHHHHHHH) during the S7 episode "En Ami". So William is the son of Scully and the CSM, and the half-brother of Mulder. Just...WHY? Why is this story necessary? I can absolutely believe that CC has had this plot in mind since S7 (it actually slots in fairly well with the timeline of that season and Scully's pregnancy), but in the nearly twenty years since, he never rethought it once? It never occurred to him that Scully had possibly suffered enough? Or that the audience who cares about Scully has suffered enough? Honestly, he is the most frustrating showrunner in the history of TV.
In other TV news, I am so sad that the next episode of The Good Place is the season finale. What will bring me joy every week once it's gone? Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's season will be ending soon too, and then I'll have to find new things to watch, because my two current faves will be on hiatus.
