So, it looks like
Jennifer Lawrence has been cast to play Katniss in the Hunger Games movies, which...meh. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Lawrence, who from all accounts is a fine actress (I didn't see Winter's Bone, so I can't say), but at 20, she's too old. Obviously there's a long tradition of twentysomething actors playing teenagers onscreen, but, well,
look at her. I mean, she's gorgeous, and she's rocking that dress, but she sure as hell doesn't look like a scrawny, malnourished 16 year old, which is what Katniss is supposed to be. I understand she played a similar character in some respects to Katniss in WB, but that was a couple of years ago, when she really was a teenager. Now she'll be at least 24 by the time they get around to filming Mockingjay, a full-fledged adult in a story where the horror hinges on the idea that children are sent out into an arena to kill each other. With Lawrence in the lead as the hero, the rest of the cast will be aged up too. At this point, I just hope we don't end up with an 18 year old Rue.
Oh, and if that article at The Wrap (linked to above) is true, and Alex Pettyfer is the front-runner for Peeta, then I'm doubly disgusted. I saw I Am Number Four (yes, that was a bad decision on my part. I was bored that day, okay? Stop judging me!), and it's not that Pettyfer is the worst actor in the world - he's not, barely - but he strikes as me as seeming very shallow onscreen. And, to be honest, the rumors of how he allegedly stalked and threatened Dianna Agron after she broke up with him make me especially uninterested in the idea of him playing Peeta, a character who is defined by his innate goodness.
Oh, and one last link while I'm posting about THG -
This piece from the Atlantic was obviously written before Lawrence was cast, but it's a nice summation of the appeal of Katniss.
