Help Me Out

Jul 30, 2006 15:00

As some of you may already know, this summer Soulforce is taking on Don't Ask, Don't Tell, which is one of the most widespread forms of government sanctioned discrimination on the books today. Don't Ask, Don't Tell is the law that prohibits openly gay, lesbian and bisexual people from serving in the US military.

So starting this week, openly gay youth will be going to military recruitment centers and attempting to enlist. These otherwise perfectly capable young adults will be turned away from serving our country simply because of their sexual orientation.

When their desire to serve is denied, young adults will sit in at the recruitment centers. Across the US over 1000 youth will be participating in sit-ins in over 30 cities. Every city will have its own schedule and demands. Our hope is that by bringing this to the attention of the American people, the nation will realize the absurdity of this law. We will also call on members of Congress to come out in support of the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, a law that would repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

Here in Austin we're organizing one of the sit-ins. We'll be attempting to enlist on August 22 at a military recruitment center located near the University of Texas. We really need people out there in support (gay, straight, whatever your orientation!), and we are still looking for people who would be willing to try to enlist with us.
