"Arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics. Even if you win your still retarted."

I've heard the quote quite a few times. mostlilley laughed the first time or two. After spending the weekend at the Special Olympics, I relize how wrong and stuipd that quote is.

This past weekend I was a voluntree photographer at the Northern Califorina Special Olympics, this is something I don't hope tp forget anytime soon. As a photographer I got to walk to all the different sports (Track and Field, Tennis, Volleyball, and Swimming) and got to chat with some of the athletes and meet some amazing people. From how some of the athletes looked and talked you knew there was something wrong with them, other seemed to be as normal as anyother kid and for the life of me I have no idea what would be wrong with them.

It's sad to think that people say and believe in the quote stated at the top. One of the track runners did a 100meter run in 12sec, I will admit right now that I could never run that fast in track. Other runners did take a long to to finish becuase of there disabilites, but in the end it didn't matter.

Once the race was over, and everyone was on the medal stand getting there awards, (all athelets got an award for every event they did) it was the greatest sight ever. Everyone was full of smiles when they got there awards. At one point during the day I was walking around and one guy was walking by and was so excited about his 4th place ribbon he won. I never have seen someone so happy and for of life for winning 4th place at anything. There were other athletes that after getting theie awards were walking around to everyone around them and giving massive hungs.

Talking to the athletes wasn't always the eaiest thing in the world to do. There was a tennis player names Tom who saw me with my camera around my neck and started talking to me. I could usually understand some what of what he was saying, but other times it was basically shake my head and smile. The funny thing is that it wasn;t a forced smile. You can't help but smile when people don't know just start talking to you and act like you've been best friends for years. Once I told him I was going to take picturs of him playing tennis he light up and got super excited.

The swimming event had some of the funniest people I could have hoped to see at an event. There was one girl, around 14 maybe, who was tired of all the cameras. I asked her if she had anything against my camera and she said yes. After that we started sticking our tounges out at eacother like litte kids. There was also a girl like that at the Track events. When she was getting ready to start her race she told me no pictures. Then at the awards she keep telling me to take pictures of her and her 4x1 team.

I know most of this my sounds like a bunch of rambeling, but there is a point behind this. Don't make fun of the those who are different from you. Those who are differnt from you can teach you more then you can ever imange.

Finally the Special Olympics Oath. "Let me win, but if i cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."
