Most orgs are legitimate. Each org differs though, and it depends on what you're looking for. Something easy on the pockets, a child who loves to write or a child whom you can send gifts to?

I personally really like OSI - Orphan Sponsorship International http://orphansponsorship.com It's a charity in Russia and Bulgaria, where they have set up orphanages for these orphans. $15 - $20 per month (depending on the age of the child). Unique to the programme, ALL of the sponsor's funds are spent exclusively on the specific needs of the child you sponsor. You will be able to know how the money is spent through your personal web-page on our web-site. OSI is a great organization and the level of communication that you can have with your child is amazing (:

Other than that, I also love World Vision USA(my kids through there are from Brazil). I once had grouses with World Vision. Admittedly, the progress report and no-package rule is downright irritating, but once you get over that, and see the amazing work done by these people, you'd feel really great.

Good luck and I hope you really do sponsor a child! It's very rewarding.
