I saw a movie last night called After Hours. Vladimir just picked it off the shelf because I was getting impatient. I didn't know anything about this movie. The plot seemed ok when he read it off the back of the box. Five minutes after we started watching it I noticed that the shots were really interesting and I commented to Vladimir. That's when he told me it's a Martin Scorsese movie. Then I thought, no wonder! You can really tell a good movie right away. I didn't even have to see much and I immediately felt how my brain was tingling. There's somethign really special about simplicity, especially in movies. There are those really dumb ones that make you sit or lie and absorb, and then there are ones that are so mind boggling that you feel really tired after watching it even though you really liked the movie. But every now and then there is a movie that is so light that you simply fly through it and feel energised after watching it, just like after a good exercise.
This movie was just like that. It was perfectly simple, the sets were almost empty, very clean, colourful. They allowed your eye to focus on expressions, movements, details. The plot was seemingly ordinary, yet twisted and quirky. I just really really liked it. I'm sorry that I wasn't able to think about it more after finishing watching it. I would have liked it to sit in my mind, to review the scenes and sounds....
I was thinking today, I haven't really seen almost any Scorsese movies. I've only seen Casino and Goodfellas and although they were interesting they never prompted me to rent more by the same director.
Tonight we rented The Taxi Driver. I liked it, although not as much as After Hours. I am not really sure why, maybe because it's purpose was more obvious and the visual clues were more predictable.
Anyhow, that's the beginning of my hibernation period. If you have any suggestions, don't be shy.
