it might be a good idea to change the meditation sessions from forty minutes to one hour. it takes up to thirty minutes just to get the mind fairly calm; the remaining ten minutes are not enough. trying to disregard the alarm on my watch and keep going just doesn't work well, one gets a bit scatter-brained after the end has been signaled. so, one hour it shall be. tonight's session was sort of bland, nondescript, but comfortable.
and i need to study buddhism more diligently than i have been. there is an american monk and scholar, who practiced in sri lanka for twenty years and took the name 'bhikkhu bodhi', who writes with amazing clarity. his prose is accessible and concise, but it goes pretty far. too bad i will never be a monk. i just couldn't take the rigorous discipline.
