Chapter three

“Do you hate me?” I asked again when he seemed puzzle over my question.

“Why would I?” he answered my question with another question. Well, since the conversation has turned pretty much weird, we’re both continue back in silent.

But he suddenly says something. “I guess…I still need more time to adjust to accept that I’m now having a sister to protect.”

If this was a drama, I would definitely make a dramatic turn to look at him with some sort of epic plus dramatic background song and these scene might being repeated plenty of time to add some juiciness of drama. Yeah. His words make me taken aback.

“Wow… I…don’t know… what to say…” I blinked my eyes rapidly. “To be honest, it wasn’t awkward for me to have a brother because I do have one and maybe, thank God, he’s being away from me now. I wish forever… and suddenly you here.”

He raised his eyebrows, looking confused. “How was your brother actually? I heard from your father that we’re same age.”

I gaze at him who is now seems interested to know about my jerk brother. Well, of course they were both so different. Like heaven and hell. Moon and sun or whatever epic things you can compare with. Eden is way more handsome, responsible, good looking etc etc unlike my obnoxious brother who is an ultimate jerk and bastards. Not to mention, ugly and reason for me to have a sore eyes. No, I wasn’t saying that the he’s ugly because he’s ugly but it’s because his personality tainted everything. He even hit me so many times whenever I refuse to follow his order or give him some money. Does that sound like a brother to you? So now you can understand why I was so taken aback when Eden mention the word sister-must-be-protected. I was so touched and it moved my heart that I could cry.

“Hey… are you still here?” Eden voice caught me and brought my daze mind to reality. I cleared my throat and smiled awkwardly. “I bet you daydreaming.”

“I’m sorry,” I bowed. “I was… what did you ask?”

“I was asking about your brother.”

I took a deep breath and lifted sleeves up to my upper arm, to show him something. A scar. A hideous scar that not just refuse to leave my skin but my painful memory as well. My brother, Jinhee pierced his burning smoke on my arm until my skin burnt. Not just that, he even kicked me. Although he didn’t hit me as much as my step father but the fact that we’re actually related by blood, it shattered my heart in more than a way. Lee Jinhee, I wish I won’t see him again until I die. I don’t even want to meet him after I die.

“This is how he ‘protects’ me when I don’t have money to give to him,” I said to him.

Eden quickly pulled my sleeves down and covers it back. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to ask you that.”

“Chill,” I chuckled. “It’s just a scar.” I began to regret for showing the scars as he started looking at me with so much sympathy. “Don’t make that face, please.”

“Well I guess, we shall get along nicely since we’re officially sibling now,” he said with smile and offers his hand for a handshake. Oh boy, that smile could generate forbidden feelings within me toward him. This is bad. This is very bad. I snap my thought and smiled cheekily at him while taking his hand and gently nod my head.

“Let’s… try,” I purposely said the word try a bit slower than the first word. I know Eden is a good brother. A real good one. One thing for sure, he respect woman and to me, for a guy who know how to respect the other gender, that already consider as a good man.

“Awww, look at them,” my step mother said. My father laughed with his hand on her shoulder, watching us as if we’re doing some performance. To be honest, I didn’t realize since when they were watching us like this. My face heated up and yeah, I feel embarrassed. To see them smile wholeheartedly, I even feel awkward. But one thing for sure, I feel a lot happier now.

Stairs, chairs, heels, hills and slopes are all my enemies. What do they all have in common? They all challenge my legs way too much. I’m hobbling and wobbling whenever I encounter the obstacles I listed above. Stairs are the worst though. I literally have to grab onto both sides of the railings or use some wall to support myself. I have to extend my legs wide open while lifting my butt up to go up a flight of stairs. Coming down from them is even worse. The pain is excruciating, and I just keep moaning.

Gabby!

Yeah, Gabby is the reason why I came up here, to my favorite rooftop spot. Plus, like I said previously, rather than spend time doing random stuff with other students, I might as well stay here alone with my Gabby until the rest time ended. Life has much more meaning to spend with a cactus rather than those obnoxious troublemaker bullies, idol wannabe or Yakuza in the making. Seriously, why would I come to this school in the first place.

….Oh yeah, I’m running away from my previous life. Just when I enter my brutal lifestyle, all of sudden my father rescued me. Now I’m feeling guilty for becoming like this. You see, there’s a percentage that I might end up become drug addict if I continue with my way. Life can be so cruel and that’s why I made a promise earlier with Eden to not our parent know about my school reputation or else my father will suffered some major stroke. That man always exaggerate and his exaggeration always reaching my nerves.

Let’s live it like that. There’s my Gabby, looking cute as always. My small little cactus that contributes oxygen to the human population.

“Aww Gabby, how are you?” I hugged my cactus carefully not to hurt myself. “Unni missing you.”

While I was practically talking with my cactus, a voice came from behind. “You surely weird, you know.”

I hastily turned and saw Jun. He doesn’t have bruises anymore. Wow, he’s a quick healer I supposed. Now that I see him without blood and injury, I can clearly see his cute face. This guy really cute with his fair skin, perfect tone without any blemish whatsoever. He has that ulzzhang look. For someone like him, with this kind of face and feature, I wonder why he’s not that popular.

“Jun. Since when you’re here?” I asked.

“Since forever,” he jokes. “I’m looking after your Gabby when you’re not around.”

I smiled. “Awww… thank you.” I said and wink at him. “By the way, you’re such a quick healer. Are you sure you’re not superman or something?”

Jun laughed upon hearing me saying that as he sit down beside me, leaned against the wall and looked up to the bright sky. “Hey, I wonder how you got such courage to come here.”

I spun at him, confused. “You mean?”

“Don’t you hear the story?” he said without looking. I take this chance to observe him a little more. Aihh this guy is cute.

“Seriously Jun, what class are you?” I ignored his question and asked the other one.

“Lucy, you should answer me first you know,” he smiled.

I slapped my forehead lightly for being a bit rude and brushed my hair using my fingers. It’s quite cold to be up here especially when the wind blew. “What was the question again?”

Jun sighed and shook his head. Probably thinking how could this girl being so ignorant and clumsy. He was right though, it’s part of my personality. Sometimes I would rather daze off and stuck in my own world.

“I’m asking if you ever heard a story about this rooftop. Since you’re new here so I believe you haven’t heard anything about it, no?” Jun finished his word and took Gabby from me, observing it with so much concentration. “Such a cute cactus,” he mumbled slowly.

“Ahh, you’re right. Nope. What story?” I shook my head and took the cactus from his hand.

“According to many senior, this place is haunted,” Jun word make me accidentally slipped Gabby off my hand and it landed directly on his shoes. Luckily he was quick enough to avoid and give me a look.

“Wh-what?”

Well, things like ghost and horror are so not my cup of tea. I get scared easily although I always pretend to act brave. But hearing Jun’s word, my mind kinda messed up. The scene from ghost movie of school girl suddenly haunted. The image of haunted school like the one that I watched from Death Bell and The Stairs suddenly crept over my vision and sends a quick shivers down to my spine.

“Aigoo, don’t tell me you believe all that?” Jun said casually and later burst into laugh. Oh yeah, do my scaredy-cat face obviously shown? I cleared my throat and flashed a smile.

“Of course not, silly,” I playfully poke at his hair and cleared my throat once again. “What was the story about? Some random girl student commited suicide or something?”

Here I am, feeling like slapping myself which I already did mentally several times for still triggering him to talk about ghost. We should have just change topic or something.

“I don’t know much. You go ask others,” Jun said. Deep inside, I know he actually noticed my ‘coward-ness’ and decided not to talk about it. How sweet is Park Junyoung.

My stomach suddenly growled and make a funny sound. It was so obvious that Jun turned at me and smiled. I returned his smile with an awkward one, flashing my teeth and blink my eyes. “I’m hungry. Let’s go eat at the cafeteria.”

He shook politely. “You go ahead. I’m not hungry.”

“You’re not? Ahh come on, my threat. You actually my first official friend here and we kinda have potential to become bestfriend forever you know,” I winked.

He laughed at my words. “You are so funny. It’s okay you go ahead. I just want to stay here.”

I suddenly flicked my finger as understatement came to me. “Aha, you’re afraid of meeting those bullies right? Who is it anyway? Let me smack him some conscious. I know some martial art.

Jun still laughed.

“I’m not joking. Yahhhhh Park Junyoung!”

*-*-*-*

I stared at my meal and sat down at the farthest table. Not really feeling like joining the crowd of students. Since it’s a break time so many students were eating. I just sat at the corner, comfortably and of course all by myself. If only Jun was here, at least I won’t be alone.

“Ahh, it’s kimchi jigae today. If only Jun was here,’ I said while scooping the rice and stuffed it inside my mouth full. Once in a while my eyes lingered around, scanning every bunch of student who was there, eating and making noise. The students here really don’t know how to stay quiet, don’t they? In class, during lab, during physical training and even during recess time, they will be like screaming, laughing and yelling like a bunch of monkeys. Sometimes I wonder, what’s the purpose for them coming to school when obviously they don’t seem to have interest toward studying, moreover taking SAT and exams for university.

After finish eating, I leave the cafeteria and bought some bread to give to Jun. He said he’s from class 3-C so I went searching for him. Unfortunately, he wasn’t there so I waited outside the class for a while.

I was so dazed and out of place when someone tapped my shoulder from behind. “You’re looking for me?”

I quickly turned and already put a big smile on my face but my smile immediately fade as I saw his face. It wasn’t Jun.

“I’m sorry but I was looking for Park Junyoung,’ I said politely. The guy that stand in front of me was really tall and his curl covered his forehead and of course, he’s not Jun. Are they play some prank on me?

“I am Junyoung,” he insisted. I’m starting to get annoying and saw a few of his classmates were looking at me, snickering. So, they really put a joke on me huh. I bet this is a guy who beat Jun and bully him. But as I glared at him, I saw his nametag on his uniform and it was written as Park Junyoung. I was taken aback and my expression immediately soften. He wasn’t joking.

“Oh…I’m sorry but I guess I’m looking for the other Park Junyoung,” I bowed again and decided to leave but he stopped me.

“Are you trying to make fun of me?” his expression now turned darker. Due to his broad shoulders and tall height, he’s quite scary now.

I bowed a few times, gave him the bread and quickly turned and run. Well, I don’t feel like messing with anyone since I have this ‘being invisible policy’. Hence, I leave without looking back. Luckily my classes situated in different level and building.

Inside the class, my chest still pumping oxygen non-stop. I was literally pumping while waiting for class teacher to come. As usual, the rest of my classmates were making chaos. I just ignored them and continue rubbing my chest. Seriously I’m not good in terms of stamina. Perhaps I should do something about it like start exercising or something.

“What is wrong with you?” a voice coming from my side. I turned and saw King was looking at me with so much interest. King or his name Wooseok. He got King as a nickname because he’s good in playing poker games and gambling. At least that’s what I know. He sat beside me in class but we rarely talk because King love to play games using his tablet and I just rather keep quiet and live in my own world. But once in a while we will spoke to each other mostly about homework and usually the conversation will not last than 3 minutes.

I was too surprised with his sudden ‘talk’ so I just stared at him. Plus my breathing still unstable.

“Are you being chased by dog or something?” King asked. Wow, for the first time in my life he actually talk to me this way.

“Long story…”I said with smile. “By the way, I didn’t know there’s two Park Junyoung from class C.”

King raised his eyebrows. “You mean class 3-C?”

“Yeah…” I nodded. “You have friends there right?”

Nodding his head, he said. “Yup. Most of everyone from class C, I know but…”

I cut his word. “That curl Park Junyoung is scary. He look like that one big dude in Japanese movie ‘Crows Zero’.”

King frowned. “Wait, can you tell me what’s up with you and Junyoung?”

Since teacher still not coming and the rest of my classmates are too absorbed in making their noisy sound, I concentrate on King and start telling him about previous incident. “And I don’t know why I give the bread to him when I originally bought for Jun.”

King expression changed. “Jun?”

“Yeah. The other Park Junyoung.”

“How did you know Jun?”

“Why?”

“Jun as in Park Junyoung? That Busan pretty boy?” King asked again. Strangely his reaction is quite weird.

“Ahh yeah the way he speaks sound mixture of satoori and he is pretty,” I said with smile. LOL, so he was named as Busan pretty boy here?

“How did you know him?” he was starting to sound confused.

“Why is it so weird if I know him?” my eyes fixed on him now.

“You just come to this school less than two month so that’s why I asked and why on earth would you buy bread for a dead guy?” King’s word almost make me choked my own oxygen. It took several second to digest his word to be honest.

“Excuse me?”

“Jun died few month ago. Actually he’s missing and the last thing we heard the police confirm his death to his family not long ago.”

From the tone of his voice and the look on his face, I could tell King wasn’t joking.

“What?!”

TBC.
