This has to be true irony. The United States is truly the bully-boy of Western Powers when it comes to the World at large. In case you don't know, several newspapers, in an effort to support free speech, printed caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad. One of which depicts the Prophet as wearing a bomb for a hat. In Islam, the image of the Prophet is forbidden, an effort to prevent idol worship. Muslims around the world were outraged by these drawings.
I understand the anger, but as always not with the retaliations. The Islamic world has now been embroiled in anger, demonstrations, and riots for over a week. The Danish embassy was burned down in Syria. People have died in the demonstrations and riots in several countries. The governments of several Middle Eastern countries have called for boycotts and ended trade agreements with Denmark. Iran has announced that it will boycott as well.
The interesting thing about boycotting Denmark is that Denmark is part of the EU. In the modern world of economics, you can not boycott only a part of a whole. So Iran would effectively have to boycott the entire EU. The EU and the US are already trying to drop tighter sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program. Is this a case where everybody wins. US and EU refuse to trade with Iran on the basis of International Security? Iran boycotts EU and US because they know they will already be boycotted, but now have a religious rallying cry? I just think it is funny.
