~*~*~*~*~

Key was laying on his bed, studying and analyzing the lyrics and nodes of possible future song, but looked up when Jonghyun came in with a deep groan and almost threw himself onto the bed.

“Anything wrong?” Key asked as he quickly tried to save the notes from getting too crumbled underneath Jonghyun’s body. Jonghyun sighed. “I was just talking with Sekyung over the phone again.”

‘Shin Sekyung’, that name made Key freeze and harden, but he covered it up by turning around and putting the papers away. Sekyung was Jonghyun’s girlfriend and the reason to the hurtful pinches in Key’s heart, ever since Jonghyun had presented her to his band members as their new ‘sister-in-law’.

“What’s wrong this time?” Forcing on a casual tone and face, Key laid down beside Jonghyun, so close they were touching due to the bed being a single. It was a good thing Jonghyun wasn’t looking at him, because he felt his face getting flustered. “Just the usual. Too much drama, I really don’t get the way girls think.”

“Ahhh…” Key mumbled and couldn’t help but feel a bit happy. He was the only one Jonghyun felt close and comfortable enough with to talk about these kinds of things. Sometimes Onew also joined them, but the deepest thoughts of Jonghyun were only for Key to hear. It always made Key pleased, even though most of their talks the past few months had been about Sekyung, he gladly listened to whatever Jonghyun said.

“Yeah… why can’t she just be easier to be with? She gets pissed off by the smallest things that I don’t even notice.” Jonghyun grumbled and stroke his hair away from his face, frustrated. “Sometimes, I really don’t get her - why can’t she just understand me like you do?!” That statement sent Key’s heart out into a wild flight, and only barely was he able to keep his cool. He rolled over and looked at Jonghyun’s face. “If she causes you so much trouble… why don’t you just break up with her?”

Jonghyun burst out laughing, taking Key by surprise. “Break up with her? It ain’t that simple! Should we disband just because we disagree on some things?” The older guy shook his head and looked into Key’s eyes, continuing with a gentle voice; “I love her, Kibum.”

If it had been possible to rip a heart out and tear it without dying, Key would have sworn that was what just happened to him. He looked away from Jonghyun and sat up when the pain made him gasp. After a moment, where Jonghyun looked puzzled at Key’s back, Key forced himself to continue the conversation; “Then, what are you going to do? What about visiting her and talk things through? I’ll cover for you.”

“Hmmm…” Jonghyun thought about it for a second. He looked at Key’s back that seemed slightly curved as if the younger guy had a stomach ache, but then he turned his attention to his cell phone, beginning to write a text message. “You’re right, as usual. Thanks! See you later.”

And with that, Jonghyun stood up and left the room again, too absorbed sending the message to hear Key’s mumble; “I wish you wouldn’t go, though…” The door closed, cutting off Key’s sentence, and he let himself fall back down on the bed, covering his face with his hands. “…because I love you…”

Despite being the ‘Diva’ of the group, Key had had problems living up to this lately, and now he just wanted to break down. He wanted to let go and forget about these feelings, to return being only a friend for Jonghyun. Because Key knew that even if he told Jonghyun about his feelings for him, Jonghyun would never return them. Why would he? He had a beautiful and talented girlfriend who wore nice dresses and high heels, she was someone Jonghyun was able to marry. They looked good together, a perfect match.

Key would never be able to beat her and win Jonghyun’s heart, he knew that. First of all, he was a boy. He couldn’t wear cute clothes for girls, t-shirt and sneakers were his brand as a male. Besides, they were team mates. Should the impossible happen and they started dating, it would create a huge commotion that would hurt their reputation if it got revealed, and this was something Key would protect the others from.

But still, Key couldn’t help but hope. He was without any doubt the one closest to Jonghyun, just like Jonghyun was the one closest to him. They understood each other on a level that was beyond the normal, they clicked whenever they were together, their laughter always came naturally. They belonged together.

Sometime later, Key felt a warmth on his shoulder and he opened his eyes, realizing it had gotten dark. He must have fallen asleep while thinking. Rolling over while rubbing his nose, Key saw Jonghyun sitting beside him. “Hey, sorry for waking you. The others said you hadn’t come out for dinner, so I wanted to check you.”

Key yawned. “I was just tired… how did it go with Sekyung?” Jonghyun stayed quiet, before lying down and snuggling into Key. “We talked. A lot.” Key waited for him to continue. “Then we agreed to part.” Shocked, Key looked at Jonghyun. This wasn’t something he had expected. “I’m sorry.” But Jonghyun just smiled faintly and shook his head. “Don’t be, it simply wasn’t meant to be. Just stay by my side.”

“I promise, always.” Key assured him. They talked a bit more, laughed a little, before they drifted off to dreamland. Side by side, as they had been for a long time and would continue to be for years to come. Belonging together.
