There is a theatre company in Chicago called
Strange Tree, that creates unique productions mixing the macabre with the screwball with the magical, landing somewhere between Edward Gorey and E. Nesbit and perhaps Monty Python. While I've never been fortunate enough to see their productions, I have read about them, seen production pictures, and am in love with the sister of one of their actors. They rule.
The Mysterious Elephant
They make plays like The Mysterious Elephant, a Victorian era tale about the unlucky Addington Twins and the mysterious elephant heirloom, played by a large mechanical elephant. And Mr. Spacky . . . The Man Who Was Continuously Followed by Wolves, a turn of the century war-time tale about a Bluebeard-esque minister. And Hey! Mr Spaceman! a 1950s musical about a Martian Robot lost in small town Riverview, Illinois. Whatever it is they are doing is different and original.
Crucible The Musible
They are currently in the running to receive 20 grand from Chase Community grants, they just need to maintain their spot in the top 200 organizations. And all it takes on anybody's part is to click a link button and and vote. Twenty grand is not a lot to a lot of organizations but to a group of artists it is, they would be able to run their entire season on this grant giving the time, energy, and resources to push the company even further. Please help support art in this country and vote for Strange Tree. Viva le Art! Viva le Strange Tree!
