As always, Casey had his camera ready, but this was a special occasion, the kind that happens only once in a lifetime.
“Come on, Torrin, stand still,” Casey said from behind the lens.
“Dad,” Torrin groaned, looking at Zeke.
“Torrin, just humor him. You know he likes to take pictures. And it’s your first date.”
“Did you have to invite Mom?”
Stokely made a face. “I want to meet your date, too. Your dads aren’t the only ones who want to see you off tonight.”
Casey finally got Torrin to stand still long enough to take a proper photo. “Okay, we’re good until she gets here.”
“You’re going to take more?”
“Of course.” Casey stepped forward and began fiddling with the knot on Torrin’s tie.
“Daaad,” Torrin grumbled, rolling his head back. “It’s fine.”
“Let him breathe, Case,” Zeke said, chuckling.
“You just look like such a little man,” Stokely sighed. “It reminds me of my first date.”
“In 1986?” Torrin asked.
“Torrin.” Zeke’s warning held no real heat, but Torrin scowled anyway.
“I was five in ’86, but thank you for sentiment, Tor. I always wanted to be older,” Stokely said, pinching Torrin’s cheek affectionately.
“Mooooom.” He leaned as far away from her as he could get.
“You’ve got it pretty easy, kiddo. Your dad only had Pop-Pop and Gram to deal with, but they were pretty strict.”
Torrin looked at Casey. “Did they put you through this?”
“Worse,” Casey said, smirking. “They wouldn’t let me date until I was sixteen. And even then, my curfew was nine.”
Torrin shrugged one shoulder. “Well, I’m probably just more mature than you were at fifteen.”
Stokely snorted. “No, we’re just not as paranoid as Casey’s parents. Plus, Zeke and I will be hiding in the bushes when you get home.”
“No you won’t!” Torrin said, looking scandalized.
Stokely and Zeke shared a laugh. “No, I’m kidding.” She got serious for a moment. “Casey is going to be in the bushes with Zeke.”
“Ugh! No, you will not!”
The sound of the doorbell interrupted their fun.
“That’s her!” Casey nearly squealed, taking up his camera again.
“Dad,” Torrin groaned again as he put his hand on the doorknob.
“Wait, why is she picking him up?” Stokely asked.
“Her parents offered to drive them,” Zeke muttered as Torrin opened the door.
Torrin’s date was an average-looking girl. She had long brown hair and braces. She was wearing a white skirt with a blue sweater, and she appeared to be covered sufficiently for Casey and Zeke’s taste.
“Hi,” she said, glancing around at Torrin’s family nervously and biting her lip. “I’m Katie.”
“Hi Katie,” Torrin said. He attempted to pull her inside when he realized her parents were standing behind her.
“I’m Brenden, and this is my wife, Alison. I hope you don’t mind us coming in, we just wanted to meet Torrin’s family.”
“Not at all,” Casey said, smiling broadly. “Please, come in. I’m Casey, this is my husband Zeke, and Torrin’s mother, Stokely.”
The adults introduced themselves to one another while Torrin looked like he wanted to crawl up and die. “Are we done?” he asked, smiling broadly.
“Hold on,” Alison said. “I want to get some pictures of you two before we leave.”
“Oh good, because I wanted some pictures, too,” Casey agreed.
It was only another fifteen minutes that Casey and Alison decided they’d taken enough pictures and allowed Torrin to leave with Katie and her parents.
When the door shut behind them, Casey, Zeke and Stokely appeared to heave a collective sigh.
“This is the beginning of the end, isn’t it?” Stokely asked.
Casey shook his head. “Don’t say that. He’s not getting married; it’s his first date.”
“Remember our first date?” Zeke asked, leering at Casey.
“Don’t you say that about my little boy.” Casey pursed his lips. “Excuse me.” He left the room rather quickly.
Stokely looked at Zeke. “This is really upsetting him.”
“He’s just emotional,” Zeke said. “It’s really hard for him to accept that Torrin’s growing up. Last night I found him watching home videos at like three in the morning. He’ll be okay.”
Stokely patted Zeke on the back. “If you need anything, let me know.”
“I will. Have a good night Stokes.”
He led her out and locked the door. Only when he saw her headlights disappear did Zeke allow a couple of tears to escape his eyes. Their little boy really was growing up, and Zeke hated to admit it. He’d lied to Stokely; it wasn’t Casey who was watching home videos of Torrin when he’d been completely dependent on his parents, it was Zeke. He just hadn’t realized that it was affecting Casey so much as well.
