As the bombs fell down around them, Zeke forced the bundle of their child into Casey's arms. "Take Nicky! I'll follow!"
"I don't want to leave you!" Casey said, searching Zeke's dark eyes. His own were full of tears.
"I'll be fine, just go!"
Zeke watched Casey run across the open ground towards the shelter. He knew it would be the last time, but he forced himself not to cry. Another bomb dropped on the open space between Zeke and the shelter just seconds after Casey disappeared into the building. Zeke found himself knocked off his feet. He sat up, spitting dust and debris out of his mouth.
Herrington was falling to pieces around him, but there was one more thing he had to do.
He raced as fast as his legs would carry him, across the rubble that used to be his house, away from the bomb shelter, away from his family, from Casey and Nicky. Nearly a mile away, Zeke stopped to catch his breath. Almost there.
He skidded to a stop in front of one of the only houses that were still standing. Without a moment's hesitation, he kicked open the front door.
"Delilah! Delilah!" he screamed.
Zeke found the girl huddled up on the bathroom floor between the toilet and the sink. Her hands were over her ears, blocking out the noise and the terrors the sounds brought.
"Come on, baby, we've gotta go," Zeke said, pulling at Delilah's wrist to get her to move.
Reluctantly, Delilah allowed Zeke to pull her to her feet and down the hall.
"We've gotta move, Del! Come on, run!"
Delilah managed to match Zeke's pace for the first half of the trip back, but she felt to her knees and cried out. "Zeke--I can't--just go without me!"
Zeke growled low in his throat. He knelt down, facing away from Delilah. "Climb on my back. And what ever you do, don't let go!"
As weak as she was, Delilah wrapped her arms and legs tightly around Zeke's torso. He gripped her thighs tightly in his hands to ensure she wouldn't fall. Their pace was slower with Zeke carrying Delilah, but he refused to leave her behind.
Zeke saw several more planes in the sky as the shelter came into view. "Just a bit longer, baby!" he called over to his shoulder to Delilah, but he wasn't sure who he was comforting at this point.
But as Zeke neared the last few steps to the shelter, another bomb fell and the ground shook, knocking him off his feet. Delilah fell away from him and the sound of an explosion rocked his ear drums. Fire and smoke billowed up all around them.
Seconds later, they were surrounded by a burst of flame and everything went black.
