Tegoshi tilted his head up to face the sunlight that clung with his last forces to the ground as trying to break through the thick moisture that hovered in the air, fine spray of water dancing with the wind.

“It’s going to rain,” Tegoshi said to himself as an old manner of him of never quieting any thought that went through his head.

Rain was so beautiful, its cold so powerful and overwhelming, the fall of its brief weightiness so graceful. He looked with wide eyes into the blinding blue, feeling now and then heavy drops hitting again his exposed pupils, but the awe was more powerful that the stinginess of foreign water running across his orbs.

He felt sudden fingers, familiar texture enclosing around his wrist, pressing the metal of his watch against delicate skin. Then, he was running, dragged under trees and showered in the fading sunlight dust that peered through soaked branches. And, after a moment, there was nothing but the echo of the rain hitting against a roof of thin metal.

“You are going to get sick.”

Soft speech talked into his ear made Tegoshi look up, staring into dark pupils. Reassuring smile formed on one face, a scowl knitting other.

“Are you listening to me?”

Tegoshi shook his head, the pink line of his lips getting larger. “I want to feel the rain.”

“You are going to get sick,” and this time it was more like an affirmation than a warning.

Tegoshi didn’t answer, too mesmerized by the layers of coldness that born on the ground as the water kept splashing against it with infinite thuds, creating constant, almost deafening, tunes of an endless lullaby.

Rain was so beautiful, that was Tegoshi used to think.

As the rain ceased and the blurry mist of fog started to dissipate, both boys resumed their walk to Tegoshi’s house, clothes dripping wet and shoes feeling heavier than usual, making odd sounds as they stepped over the flow of water still running down the sidewalks.

The streets were insolated.

A car passed by them, forming a wave of water that splashed over their already wet forms.

Tegoshi flinched, but it was too late to avoid the unwanted shower. Looking down at his entire attire, soaked with water, he laughed until his stomach started to hurt.

He turned to the side. A straight-faced boy, incredulous by Tegoshi newfound happiness, looked back at him.

“You look so hot right now. Tell me you planned that just to seduce me,” Tegoshi said between fits of laughs, beautiful smile stretching the lips adorned with so many spots.

“It cost me a fortune.”

Tegoshi giggled. Giggling was different than laughing. Giggling showed timidity in Tegoshi, and timidity led to red cheeks and a sudden hand covering the smile.

“Actually, I like Yuya a lot.”

“Oh, drop it,” Tegoshi said happily, his gaze shifting nervously. “Shige will get mad if he finds out about the way you talk to me.”

“Shige’s not here now.”

Tegoshi smiled. Sometimes, Masuda could get really flirty.

“What is this?”

“Milk.”

“No. This is regular milk."

“So?”

“You should buy soy milk, it tastes better.”

“That’s the milk Shige likes, and that’s the one he likes to buy me.”

“I see.”

Masuda approached the sink, spilling the white liquid in it. Turning on the tap, he washed the rest of the milk away, he washed his hands.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The cell phone rang incessantly.

Tegoshi stirred slightly as Masuda snored.

It kept ringing, vibrating helplessly against the table surface.

Tegoshi woke up, took the cell phone and flipped it open.

“Hello?”

Koyama was on the other line.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heavy, the rain kept pouring over Tegoshi’s running form.

It was almost a flood, not a single spot free from its heavy moisture.

The rain washed it all away, except what was in the inside, what was really paining Tegoshi.

He should have known that pain was immune.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The older boy stopped in the doorway, his hand still clutching at the knob as he stared at the back of his friend. Tegoshi was facing at the closed window, at the rain drops hitting against the glass. His clothes were soaked in water, the whole figure so still it seemed like if he wasn’t breathing at all.

There are a few things in life people can understand without an explanation. Unspoken and senseless they are, but can be realized yet so.

Masuda knew Tegoshi was broken. He just knew it. He sensed it in the aura, in the dimness of the room, in the stillness of the air, in the heaviness that filled the space. It was all the same, but it was different somehow.

Masuda entered the room, closing the door silently, and made his way to stand in front of Tegoshi.

Tegoshi turned to look at Masuda, blinked and his eyelids washed away the bright wetness that was on his pupils.

“There’s no more milk left,” Tegoshi stated, merely gesticulating as the words came out as a whisper.

“We can buy some more later,” Masuda answered, unsure of why his voice sounded so weak.

Tegoshi nodded slowly and turned to gaze at the wet patterns on the window glass again.

“I’m sorry,” Tegoshi said in a breakable voice. “I know it will hurt,” he resumed, speaking softly, but in a serious tone, eyes staring into space. “When the feeling of numbness stops, it will hurt badly.”

Masuda sat on the bed slowly, the mattress dipped under his weight, making Tegoshi’s figure tilt slightly toward him.

“I‘m sorry, but I can’t do anything to make you feel better.” The older boy slid a hand up Tegoshi’s back, brushing over the fabric until it reached the shoulder.

Tegoshi turned to look at Masuda, catching sight of his profile. “Why?,” he asked, feeling hurt, it was a different kind of pain, it was annoying and immediate, upset by his best friend’s indifference.

“The pain within me has stood for so long I can’t tell you how to face it.” Masuda turned also, looking at the small boy. “I can just teach you how to hide it.”

Tegoshi laughed in disbelief, bitterly, until his every gesture started to vibrate with a deep sob.

“He never loved me,” abruptly, Tegoshi was yelling, angered at his own naivety, “he never did. How could I ever hide that?,” he took in a long, sharp breath, “he deserves to feel my pain.”

Tegoshi gasped, an intake of sought air, just to not sob again, and his throat didn’t work anymore, too overwhelmed with the cries that were fighting to emerge and the gulps that crushed the upcoming whines.

It kept raining, but the drops were now corrupted, filled with the words of Koyama and his coarse tone, imprinted with images of Shige’s beautiful lips being claimed by others, and impregnated with the smell of sweat and the slight aroma of Shige’s shampoo.

Suddenly, Tegoshi didn’t like the rain anymore.

To be continued...
