Title: What We Both Are
Pairing: Jessica/Tiffany
Rating: PG
Word count: approx. 900
Two women sat beside each other as they went over their philosophy homework together. The redheaded woman sighed, clearly irritated by their assignment. She read the quote over and over again, but nothing came to mind.

“Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly dreaming I am a man.”

“Jess…” Tiffany called, her whine seeking immediate attention. She stared at her brunette friend expectantly, hoping the other would stop typing at her 5-page report. “Jess-i-ca.” The redhead inched closer to the older woman and when she was face-to-cheek with her best friend, the fingernails tapping against keyboard came to a stop.

“Tiffany, you’re breathing on my face.”

“I don’t get this,” the younger woman complained, ignoring her friend’s previous statement.

The feeling of Tiffany’s warm breath against the baby hairs on Jessica’s neck was too tempting. The latter repositioned herself so that Tiffany was no longer breathing down her neck.

“What don’t you get?”

“The whole philosophy of humans and butterflies…” The brunette pressed her bottom lip upwards, which elicited a laugh from Jessica. “What?”

“The quote has nothing to do with humans and butterflies. It’s actually about dreams and realities. Just think about it for a-” Her sentence was cut short by a beep that emitted from Tiffany’s phone.

“It’s Taec…” Tiffany announced almost apologetically as if she was aware of Jessica’s feelings for her. She watched for her best friend’s reaction, and at that moment, the brunette wondered if Tiffany had known about her feelings.

“It’s fine,” and a forced smile. “I’m tired anyways.” Jessica yawned, trying to convince her friend that sleep was indeed pulling at her eyelids.

“Are you sure it’s okay? I can always tell him we’re busy… or something.”

“Yes, it’s fine. Our report isn’t due until next week anyways.”

“If you say so…” Tiffany stood up, but was reluctant to leave. “Hey Jess?”

“Yeah?”

Tiffany eyed the woman as she laid her head against the armrest and covered her eyes with her right arm. She sat back down on the couch by Jessica’s hips and pulled her woman’s arm from her eyes.

“If there’s anything, you know, that you want to tell me or need to tell me… please do.”

Jessica’s eyebrows knitted together. Now she was sure that Tiffany knew something. The brunette pulled her right arm away from the redhead’s grasp and placed it back over her eyes.

“What are you talking about?”

“Uhm, nothing… never mind.”

Jessica stayed silent until she heard Tiffany’s footsteps grow lighter and lighter. She released the breath she did not know she held when she heard the front door shut with a click.

You’re a coward, Tiffany… we both are.

Jessica scoffed and thought back to the quote her philosophy teacher had assigned to both her and Tiffany. What if… she thought. What if reality was merely an illusion and dreams were actually reality? What if a reality’s purpose was to simply act as a net for all the imperfections that a dream could not hold?

Because dreams were always perfect, right?

A lopsided grin made its way to Jessica’s face as her thoughts began to flow freely.

Dream

Jessica gasped as she woke up from a terrifying reality. Her sudden action had apparently woken Tiffany up as well. The redhead looked at her girlfriend, worried. She had never seen the brunette so distressed.

“Jess? What’s wrong?”

“I-I just had a bad reality.”

“What was it about?” Tiffany asked, her tone laced with curiosity.

Jessica closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She lay back down and motioned for the other woman to follow suit. When she felt Tiffany snuggling into her embrace, she draped her arm around the redhead’s waist and parted her almost-trembling lips.

“You left me… in my reality you left me.”

“Jess, you know I would never do that,” Tiffany reassured. She spoke slowly to make sure each and every word was engraved into her girlfriend’s mind. “I would never leave you… what would I do without you?”

The last question barely made it past a whisper, but it managed to reach Jessica’s ears and that was all the brunette needed to hear. She placed a kiss on Tiffany’s forehead, basking in delight when she saw a contented smile resting on the younger woman’s face.

End Dream

Jessica groaned, becoming aware of the fact that she had woken up from her flawless life. Dreams were always too short, too short for Jessica’s liking anyways.

The brunette craned her neck to see that it had been three hours since Tiffany stepped foot out of her front door. Jessica closed her eyes, hoping sleep would bring her back to the world that held no imperfections. She wanted to return to the world where there were no Taecyeon’s or cowardly Jessica’s and Tiffany’s who were too afraid to admit their true feelings.

Jessica wanted - no, she needed - to go back to the world where there was no discrimination against love. She didn’t like reality and she was sure as hell positive that 99.99% of the human race agreed with her.

The 20-year-old sighed. What if… she thought. What if reality was only an illusion and dreams were actually reality? Jessica laughed at the silly thought.

Then I would be a butterfly… we both would be butterflies.

The End
