Solidarity ...

Well, I'm still at Atlanta. Forever at Atlanta, it feels like. XD It's fun, but sadly it means I had to miss going to the open rally for the WGA in Hollywood today. If I'd had the day free, I would've. Makes me nostalgic for my protesting glory days. ;) Instead, I thought I'd post some stuff about being supportive here on LJ and on the net in general.

If you are unaware, United Hollywood is a website set up by a bunch of the WGA strike captains. They've set up a petition for people to sign in support of the WGA strike. If you haven't added your 'signature', now's the time.

Also, you can visit this site, pencils2mediamoguls, where they've set up an act of nonviolent protest by asking people to buy $1 boxes of pencils which will be inscribed with whatever tv show you are supporting. These pencils will then be delivered in bulk to each of the network head honchos (along with directions on how to donate them to worthy causes) to import how many fans and WGA supporters there are out there. I've already bought a bunch, for CSI, Heroes, Pushing Daisies and DSM respectively, seeing as they're the shows I enjoy that will truly be affected by this strike.

At Fans4Writers.com, you can donate money to help feed the strikers at least once a week, something very much appreciated seeing as they're not getting paid. The '88 strike went on for over 5 months, and I've been regaled by co-workers with tales of people losing their houses and cars and families struggling hugely. All in the name of solidarity. Also, on LJ, if you want up-to-date info on what's happening, wga_supporters is a comm for all your WGA strike news.

Talks are coming up, if you're not totally up to speed on what's happening. So all the support you can show now can make all the difference after Thanksgiving when they go back to the table. I'm a writer. I may not write scripts, but I write, I belong to the business, and I know what it's like to put your life's blood into something and get cut out of a whole side of the profits for the thing that you made. The WGA is lucky to have a strong organization, and it's lucky to have people out there who support them ... Like us. LJers and those of us who are fic writers or RPers and so on ... We're all writers, too. So let's show our support for our fellow writers, especially since they inspire many of us to write as well.

Also, above all, we're TV fans. And there won't be anything other than reality TV for a while if something doesn't happen soon. So give your support. Sign the petition, write a letter, call someone, buy some pencils, feed an actor. Overcome apathy.

/rant ... I so feel like I've been in one of those ASPCA commercials. Or a Feed the Children one. Blech. XP)
