So.
travelsofbecca's birthday present to me was going to see They Might Be Giants tonight.
What can I say? It was FANTASTIC.
First, I have to say, their opener, Oppenheimer, was pretty awesome. Two guys from Belfast rocking out on a bunch of instruments - as if TMBG was letting an Irish version of themselves from fourteen years or so ago open for them. XD All their songs were upbeat and blippy, and Bec and I decided they were somewhere between The Postal Service and Belle and Sebastien. But the best thing about them? When they introduced their third song, M.O., the lead began to expound on how they had written it about the best TV show ever ... Twin Peaks. Oh yes, oh yes. Especially about the good Agent Dale Cooper, but there were elements of the whole plot in the song. I wish I could find the lyrics online, but I couldn't. I think I may end up buying their CD, though, because they were excellent, especially after that.
Of course, TMBG themselves ... well, they just rocked. Pure and simple. It was fantastic. The final song they played was Istanbul, the song that first really got me into them because I sang it in a capella ... Weird, because the same thing happened to me with The Decemberists when I saw them last. Not my favorite song, but it was the one that made me want to listen to all their ther songs, and here I am. They played new stuff which was fantastic (MUST BUY NEW RECORD). They played old songs that made us all go wild and sing along. They didn't play all my favorites, but with a book like theirs, it's not possible to play every one of my favorite songs and mix it with new stuff and random fun stuff. Because they are so hilarious and fun live. And adorable, did I mention adorable? I just want to cuddle both of them. Oh, John and John. Seriously. Also, Lionel Barrymore. Hi. Larious.
I ♥ you, TMBG.
